What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the top-quality live Cuban music and the vibrant atmosphere at Casa de la Trova Patricio Ballagas, making it a must-visit for a fun night out. While some lament the occasional shift to reggaeton, the overall experience of dancing and enjoying the music on the patio is highly praised, with affordable prices adding to its appeal.
"Excellent place to relax and have great time with Cuban and foreign modern music. There are different shows for the week. Tuesday and Saturday night are pretty much for young people like me. If you are thinking of traveling to Cuba and Camaguey do not miss this place. You won't regret it."

"We were told the music would start in 10 minutes. We bought a ticket. After 75 minutes, nothing. Then a huge group of tourists arrived and the music started. We'd waited long enough for this "tourist program." Two stars because the first song was nice."

"This July 2016, we've been greatly frustrated by the trova houses in almost all of Cuba. But now it's the turn of the one in Camagüey.
A huge, elongated patio with tables and a bar, and the stage in the back. Excellent atmosphere and a warm but charming night.
The first hour or so was more or less wonderful with an excellent group playing traditional Cuban music, as is only natural in these temples of the best music in the world for decades.
Meanwhile, young people keep coming in, who, while not dancing, respect the dance floor and let us who are still dancing enjoy ourselves, because that's why we came all the way from Spain.
But suddenly... the musicians leave, and the reggaeton starts. Yes, in Cuba and the trova houses, too, the noise has started. The young people who were waiting invade the dance floor and neither dance nor let anyone else. It turns into very well-dressed girls and boys, more focused on their cell phones in one hand and drinks in the other, trying to move to the beat of whatever's playing.
And since they "kicked us out," we left. I hope this horrible change in Cuban culture is only temporary, because that's certainly not what we're going to do."

The Evolution of Cuban Music at Casa de la Trova
However, some recent reviews note a shift, with reggaeton sometimes replacing traditional trova later in the evening. This change has been met with mixed reactions. While some younger patrons embrace the contemporary beats, long-time fans and older visitors express disappointment, feeling it detracts from the 'temple of music' atmosphere they cherish. This evolution reflects broader trends in Cuban popular music, but it's a point of consideration for those seeking a purely traditional trova experience.
Despite these shifts, the Casa de la Trova remains a vibrant hub for music lovers. The large patio, the bar service, and the overall energetic ambiance continue to draw crowds. It’s a place where you can still find excellent live performances and enjoy a fun night out, whether you're there for the classic trova or the more modern rhythms.
Navigating the Camagüey Nightlife
Reviews indicate that Tuesdays and Saturdays are particularly popular, often attracting a younger demographic. This can mean a more energetic, perhaps louder, atmosphere. For those who prefer a slightly more subdued experience, other evenings might be more suitable, though still offering high-quality musical performances. The mention of potential delays in showtimes, sometimes linked to the arrival of tourist groups, is a practical tip for managing expectations.
Beyond the music, the Casa de la Trova provides a glimpse into Cuban social culture. The interaction between performers and the audience, the shared enjoyment of dance, and the communal atmosphere are all part of what makes a night here special. It’s more than just a venue; it’s a cultural immersion.
