"Most important cultural center of the city Santiago de Cuba. Linked since its beginnings to artistic, political, intellectual and scientific events; It constitutes one of the most valuable architectural jewels built after the triumph of the Revolution.
The Heredia was built from an initial idea hatched in 1982, as part of Operation Heredia directed by Army General Raúl Castro.
Among the fundamental purposes of that program were civil constructions, including a theater that would fulfill the dreams of the people of Santiago, deprived of a facility of this type, after the destruction by fire of the Aguilera Theater and later the closure of the Teatro Oriente.
On December 23, 1986, construction of the building began. The people of Santiago did thousands of hours of unpaid work, along with the builders in the social work that has brought them so much satisfaction.
Project by architect Antonio Quintana, it was inaugurated on August 13, 1991. It occupies an area of 72,800 m2, the main building consists of 8,359 m2 and a green area of 47,047 m2, the roads extend over a perimeter of 5,895 m2 and the parking spaces extend over 9,225 m2. The system of auxiliary warehouses with 810 m2 and warehouses with 924 m2 have been designed for multiple purposes.
Its main hall with capacity for 2,452 people, has 1,723 lunettes in the stalls and 729 on the balcony, it also has rooms for rehearsals for choirs, orchestras, dances, individual and collective dressing rooms for change and quick change, hairdressing salon, costume warehouse and sewing workshop, all of unparalleled functionality in the country.
It also has three rooms equipped with audio systems and modern lights and a series of galleries on the ground floor that serve as venues for exhibitions and meetings."
