"Is such a shame that is not very well posted before you get there, as I stumble upon it while walking in the area. Once you reach it the archaeological site is open and free to explore. It has taken less that 30 minutes to read the history and walk the area.
There are 19 tombs in total with a stairway leading you down but they are all empty, also there's a sanctuary and a quarry. The archaeology site it was part of a settlement in Hellenistic and Roman period before it was abandoned in the 7th century.
The site is open from from 9.00 to 17.00 and close during public holidays."

Kypriopoulla

"One of the best beaches in Cyprus! Picturesque small caves, pristine beaches with sift white sand, turquoise blue waters and tiny reefs to snorkel! The prices for sunbeds and umbrellas are more than fair! Just try it!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Glimpse into Ancient Burial Practices

The Makronissos Archaeological Tombs offer a fascinating window into the burial customs of the Hellenistic and Roman periods in Cyprus. The site comprises 19 rock-cut tombs, each meticulously carved into the limestone. These tombs typically feature a dromos, or entrance corridor, leading down to a chamber. Inside, you'll find benches along the sides and often a rectangular trench in the middle, suggesting multiple burials within a single tomb. Archaeologists believe that deceased individuals were placed in clay sarcophagi, originally covered with flat tiles. InstagramReddit

The presence of pyres found on the surface further indicates adherence to Greek burial customs. While the tombs have unfortunately been subject to looting over the centuries, their architectural integrity remains, allowing visitors to appreciate the skill and planning involved in their construction. The site also includes a small sanctuary and remnants of an ancient quarry, hinting at a larger settlement that once thrived here before its abandonment around the 7th century CE. InstagramReddit

Exploring these tombs is a unique experience, as they are left largely unspoiled and accessible. You can walk down the steps and enter each chamber, imagining the lives and rituals of the people who used them millennia ago. It's a quiet and contemplative space, offering a stark contrast to the bustling beaches nearby. Reddit
