"A beautiful walk. The initial part is uphill, but that doesn't last long and you a rewarded with three most majestic often view of you persevere. Once you get past the initial uphill it's a casual and scenic stroll. Don't get confused when the trail leads into what looks like a dirt road. That is still the trail."

"Lovely place to walk, and parts of the trail were lined with trees which provided some shade on a hot day. In March we saw lots of rock roses in flower.
we found the trail easy to follow but some others said they got a bit lost at the end. I recommend you take a photo of the map at the car park/ picnic place, so that you've got something to refer to on your walk, as there are various paths to choose from."

"We parked just down from the picnic area (which Google maps takes you to) and picked up the trail in reverse so the 'steep start' mentioned in other reviews was actually the end of ours. Most of the tracks are marked on Google maps so it's easy to follow. The trail has markers along the way also. Took us about 2 hours to do the 5km route with stops along the way, 6yr old in tow. Some of the route is rocky with a few ups & downs but mainly it's a wide first track road that's easy to follow. Beautiful views along the way and lots of flowers this time of year.
Stopped to see the donkeys on the way out."

Navigating the Smigies Nature Trail
Many hikers find that using Google Maps on their phones can also be helpful, as parts of the trail are marked. However, relying solely on GPS might not always be sufficient due to the trail's layout. Combining a digital map with a photo of the physical map provides the best of both worlds. Remember that the trail can be rocky with some inclines and declines, so sturdy footwear is essential for comfort and safety.
For those who prefer to tackle the 'steep start' mentioned in reviews as the beginning, starting from the picnic area and following the marked path is the way to go. Alternatively, some visitors opt to do the trail in reverse, making the steeper section the final part of their hike. This flexibility allows you to tailor the experience to your preference.
Wildlife Encounters and Trail Etiquette
Beyond the donkeys, the trail is a haven for flora, especially in spring when it's adorned with a vibrant display of rock roses and other wildflowers. This makes it a fantastic spot for nature lovers and photographers. The trail is largely exposed to the sun, so carrying ample water and wearing sun protection is crucial, particularly during the hotter months. Opting for an early morning hike is highly advised to avoid the peak heat of the day.
As with any natural area, practicing good trail etiquette is important. Stick to the marked paths where possible to minimize your impact on the environment. Remember to take all your litter with you, leaving the trail as beautiful as you found it. This ensures that the Smigies Nature Trail remains a pristine and enjoyable destination for everyone.
