Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk for its unique and beautiful Baroque-Gothic design, rich symbolism, and the architectural genius of Jan Santini Aichel. Many recommend visiting the museum and taking a guided tour to fully appreciate its historical and religious significance. Some note that the site can be run down but is undergoing restoration, and suggest winter visits for a less crowded experience.

"Very beautiful designed and unique church. Visit the museum first to learn more about the history of the church."

Ronny Fritsch

"This is a beautiful gothic church in the Czech Republic. It has some special characteristics that make it stand out: the flying buttresses, the pointed roofs, the gorgeous stained glass and of course the many interior ribbed arches. Inside you will find elaborate wooden pieces dedicated to the different guilds, confessionals, several chapels and the very large organ decorated with the golden figures of small angels. On the roof are the coats of arms of all the different guilds that took part in its construction as well as that of the silver mine that provided the money to fund the structure.
Don’t miss a chance to get a tour of the silver mines and the companion site at Sedlec Ossuary where you will find the church adorned with human bones."

Deb Werenko

"One of the best works of the brilliant Czech architect with Italian ancestors, Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel, is one of the most original examples of the so-called Baroque Gothic, that you can see only in Czech. In an incredibly elaborate building a number of symbols and religious and historical messages is hidden. The symbols are dominated by the tongue, the five-pointed star and the number five. The foundation of the church was connected with the forthcoming beatification and canonization of John of Nepomuk. Construction began in 1719, in 1922 the church was consecrated.

Tip: if you are not a fan of mass tourism, I recommend special winter visits. In sunny weather, the church and the surrounding countryside have their charms, plus instead of buses full of tourists, there were around twelve of us here. Not only was it time to see everything thoroughly, but even the guide's interpretation did not have to be like machine gun and there was time for conversation as well.

Úžasné dílo geniálního českého architekta s italskými předky, Jana Blažeje Santiniho-Aichela, představuje jednu z nejoriginálnějších příkladů tzv. barokní gotiky. V neuvěřitelně propracované stavbě je ukryta celá řada symbolů a náboženských i historických sdělení. Ze symbolů dominuje jazyk, pěticípá hvězda a číslo pět. Založení kostela souviselo s připravovaným blahořečením a svatořečením Jana Nepomuckého.

The Architectural Marvel of Jan Santini Aichel

The Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk is a testament to the genius of Jan Blažej Santini Aichel, a Bohemian architect of Italian descent. His final work, completed in 1722, is a groundbreaking fusion of Baroque and Gothic styles, a rare combination often referred to as 'Baroque Gothic'. This unique approach is evident in the church's dynamic forms and intricate detailing. Instagram

The design is heavily influenced by symbolism, particularly the number five and the star shape. The church's layout, with its five chapels, five altars, and five gates, along with the five-pointed star motif, all pay homage to St. John of Nepomuk. This deliberate integration of religious and historical messages makes the church more than just a building; it's a narrative in stone. Reddit

Visitors are encouraged to explore the ornate wooden pieces, confessionals, and elaborate stained glass to fully appreciate Santini's vision. The exterior's flying buttresses and pointed roofs further showcase the blend of Gothic structure with Baroque embellishment. Reddit

Beyond the numerical and stellar references, the church also incorporates other symbolic elements. The tongue, a symbol of St. John of Nepomuk's martyrdom, is subtly woven into the design. The foundation of the church itself was tied to the preparations for his beatification and canonization, making the entire site a monument to his legacy. Reddit

Even the exterior details hold meaning. The coats of arms on the roof represent the various guilds and the silver mine that funded the construction, signifying the community's involvement and the economic support behind this grand project.
