What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Teplá Monastery offers a peaceful escape with beautiful, free-to-access grounds and gardens. While the interior, particularly the Baroque library, is impressive, guided tours are primarily in Czech and can be costly for foreigners, leading some to recommend enjoying the exterior. The water learning zone is a hit with families.
"Tepla monastery is well worth a visit, most parts can be visited for free. Guided tour available with a written translation. Beautiful old church, nice gardens and lake, some outbuildings are not a little shabby but it adds to the character of the place. Our niece loved the water learning zone where kids can interactively learn about water pumps, water flow etc near an old mill."

"Surrounding is nice enough. Walk around the buildings and park is recommended. The tour was boring, expensive in Czech and no photos. Only the library and church were a bit of interest. 8 euro was too much for that."
Tim Nijsmans
"I strongly advise to just walk around the abbey to get a good look at the moderately well-preserved abbey. Entrance to the abbey grounds is free
The guided tour inside is a borderline scam!!
The entire tour is told in Czech, the tour guide didn't even greet foreign visitors in english or german. Most of the tour is uninteresting, the 'museum' features nothing noteworthy, the church is the average high baroque interior, nothing special either. The only interesting part is the library.
We literally got scammed by the lady selling us tickets because we had to pay more than the people before us, because we were foreigners
This is totally unacceptable, especially when foreigners get a lesser experience.
You're not allowed to take pictures from the inside, probably to hide the fact that the interior is just not worthy of your time and money."

Understanding the Teplá Monastery Experience
However, potential visitors should be aware that interior tours are primarily conducted in Czech. Some reviews indicate that the guided tours can be expensive for non-Czech speakers and may not offer substantial value beyond the library itself. Photography is also restricted inside, leading some to speculate it's to mask the limited appeal of other exhibits.
Despite these caveats, the monastery's historical significance and the serene environment of its grounds make it a worthwhile visit for many. The presence of a water learning zone also adds an engaging element for families.
Navigating Tours and Access
There's a recurring theme in reviews regarding the tour experience for international visitors. Tours are conducted in Czech, and while written translations might be available, the overall delivery can be a barrier. Some travelers have reported feeling overcharged as foreigners, leading to a perception of a 'borderline scam.' This has led many to recommend simply enjoying the free access to the grounds and skipping the paid interior tour if language is a concern or if the cost-to-experience ratio seems unfavorable.
