What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
U Medvídku offers a classic Czech dining experience in a historic 15th-century brewery setting, praised for its generous portions and excellent on-site brewed dark beer. While many enjoy the authentic atmosphere and value, some visitors have encountered inconsistent or rude service, particularly in the main restaurant during peak hours.
"We came across this tavern style establishment whilst looking for somewhere to have a traditional Czech meal at reasonable price. The menu provided a range of traditional Czech food and drinks to choose from at a reasonable price.
The food was very good and be aware that it comes in large portions. The beers, particularly the Dark was excellent and complimented the food.
It does get busy and a bit loud (due to the old style buildings), so if you want to ensure a seat as there are no reservations we suggest arrive by 6:45pm."

"Possibly the rudest waitress in the main restaurant that I have ever come across and initial service that felt like something from a spoof tv show. Not even a hello god forbid a smile and instead got told to ‘use your eyes LADY’ when asking a very simple polite question. As a waitress myself, I would have got a disciplinary for this behaviour. Got seated in the separate bar area and the service was thankfully redeemed by a lovely man who was quick, friendly and didn’t scowl and shout at us like the previous interaction. The food was good and the drinks were nice. Overall it was a pleasant experience after all but the reviews about service are definitely not lying."

"The food was ok, nothing particularly good. Same offer and prices as other places. But the attention was just awful. The completely ignored us, made us order too fast without time to choose and they were constantly rude. Perfect definition of a tourist trap."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the menu is primarily traditional Czech fare, which can be appealing to adventurous eaters, it might be limited for picky eaters. The generous portions mean you might not need to order a full meal for each child. The on-site brewed beer is a highlight for adults, but families should be aware of the lively, pub-like atmosphere.
💰 Budget Travelers
Opting for the house-brewed beer, especially the X-Beer-33, is often more economical than ordering imported or specialty drinks. While the main restaurant can be busy, the bar area might offer a slightly more casual and potentially quicker dining experience that aligns well with a budget-friendly approach.
🍻 Beer Enthusiasts
Beyond the X-Beer-33, the establishment offers a taste of traditional Czech brewing. The historic setting of a 15th-century brewery adds to the overall experience, making it more than just a pub visit. It's a chance to connect with Prague's rich brewing heritage.

The Historic Brewery Experience
Beyond the ambiance, the on-site brewing is a major draw. Their signature dark lager, X-Beer-33, is a testament to their continued brewing legacy. Many visitors rave about the quality and taste of this unique beer, often calling it a must-try when in Prague. It’s not just about drinking beer; it’s about experiencing a craft that has been perfected over generations.
While the historical setting is a significant part of its appeal, it's worth noting that the old buildings can contribute to a lively, and sometimes loud, atmosphere. This is part of the authentic tavern experience that many patrons seek. If you're looking for a quiet, intimate meal, consider visiting during off-peak hours or opting for the bar area.
Navigating the Service at U Medvídku
However, a recurring theme in some reviews is the potential for less-than-ideal service in the main restaurant. Instances of rudeness, dismissiveness, or feeling rushed have been mentioned. It's important to approach your visit with an open mind, as experiences can vary significantly. Some travelers suggest that the bar staff might offer a more consistently positive service experience.
To mitigate potential service issues, arriving earlier in the evening, before the peak rush, might lead to a more relaxed and attentive service. Being polite and patient yourself can also go a long way. Ultimately, while the food and beer are generally well-regarded, managing expectations regarding service is advisable for a smoother visit.
