Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise King's Garden for its beauty, historical significance, and peaceful atmosphere. It's described as a delightful and picturesque walking experience, perfect for relaxation and enjoying nature. The well-maintained grounds and charming features like the Hercules Pavilion are frequently highlighted as enjoyable aspects.

""A fish never discovers its need for water until it is no longer in it"

These words, from Frans Trompenaars, rang in my ears as I walked around Kongens Have on an overcast but mild Sunday afternoon. Partly this was because my brother said them, but I also like to think a powerful metaphor can be drawn here.

There are some fish in the waters which create the boundary between Rosenborg Slot and Kongens Have. On this afternoon they were attempting to extricate themselves from said water in a manner I can only describe as akin to a cultlike group suicide pact.

This was caused I believe by their desire to be fed by the onlooking tourists. I had no food with me so just splashed their exposed backs with the water a bit.

To me, this whole situation smacked of something larger. Parallels can be drawn between these bold fish seeking sustenance from beyond the murky depths, and the Danes which populate the surrounding streets of Copenhagen.

Denmark has a famously insular society. Suspicion and awareness of outsiders are taught at a young age, and the cultural, political, and legal systems of the country do not make it easy for internationals living in the country to integrate.

Copenhagen, however, has seen a boom in tourism in recent years. Overnight stays from international tourists increased 87% in the years between 2012-2019. This, combined with the number of migrants who call the city their home, has changed the feel of the Danish capital immeasurably.

Danes who choose to live in Copenhagen are doing so in spite of their own reservations and fears at the ebb, change, and potential loss of their own nation’s culture.

One could say they are just like the fish in Kongens Have, seeking to emerge from their water but not fully understanding how.

Rest of the park is quite nice too - there’s some good trees and statues and stuff."

Marco Polato

"Beautiful park and nice walk; you can also sit on the grass and sleep, which looks like the locals' afternoon routine. All together a nice walk with family and resting place we enjoyed."
