What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Boiling Lake hike is an intensely challenging but profoundly rewarding adventure, lauded for its unique and breathtaking volcanic scenery. While the trail is steep, muddy, and demanding, the experience of traversing the Valley of Desolation and reaching the second-largest hot lake in the world is unforgettable. Visitors consistently emphasize the necessity of hiring a knowledgeable local guide for safety and navigation.
"DANGEROUS! Very dangerous hike. Technical and pretty traitorous conditions but ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. The terrain is steep and slippery. You are either scrambling rocks or walking on logs. You definitely need to hire a guide as the trail is not marked. NO CELL SERVICE in most of the hike and NO search and rescue in the country if you fall and get hurt. (Someone slipped and died the day we did the hike) The route is about 8miles round trip and 2,600 ft elevation gain total but it will take around 5 or 6 hrs due to the conditions (ours was 7.5hrs because of the accident) With that said, it is well worth it. Absolutely beautiful views along the way with lots of hot water crossings which felt amazing to dip my feet in. Wear shoes that can be soaking wet and muddy for the entire hike. I wore reef shoes with socks and I was comfortable. Some people wear bathing suits and swim in the hot water from the volcano. The actual lake is not worth the hike because it’s steamy and you can barely see the water boiling 300 ft from the edge where you stand but the scenery to it is unbelievable. You can even see the lava flows from previous eruptions when you hike down into the crater. This is like no other hike and I would highly recommend it, but don’t hike it if you have balance issues."

"We normally don't hire guides for day hikes, but we'd heard Boiling Lake requires it, so based on prior reviews here, Chadi Symes sounded like the obvious choice for the job. He was timely, knowledgeable, fun, and let us take our time getting there and back. We completed the whole hike in about 7 hours. This is definitely a Type 2 fun kind of adventure where you're going to work for it, but you'll feel accomplished afterwards. When Chadi says this is the most extreme hike in the Caribbean, he's not exaggerating. The scenery is like nothing I've ever seen before and I'm grateful to have been able to make it here before the cable car is operational."

"I did the hike on Nov 4 2024. Was the most amazing hike ever. Took us 7 hours to complete. I went with the best Tour Guide. His name was Peter (Bushman Tours). He made me take a lot of pictures/videos, and he also knows a lot about plants. He charged me $120ec. It was tough. Started to had cramps in my legs in my way back. But it was worthy. There are plenty of beautiful plants on the road. Beautiful fresh rivers in the beginning and then hot rivers the closer you get."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
If your family is adventurous and includes older, experienced hikers (teenagers or young adults in excellent physical condition), consider hiring a highly reputable guide who can assess your group's capabilities. However, for most families seeking a nature experience in Dominica, there are many more accessible and child-friendly options within Morne Trois Pitons National Park, such as the Trafalgar Falls or Titou Gorge.
💰 Budget Travelers
To save money, try to form a group with other travelers. Guides often charge a flat rate or a per-person fee that becomes more economical when split among several people. Research and book your guide in advance, as last-minute arrangements might be more expensive. Packing your own food and water is also crucial, as there are no vendors on the trail.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Bring durable gear that can handle moisture and mud. A wide-angle lens is perfect for capturing the expansive volcanic vistas, while a telephoto lens can highlight the details of the geothermal features. Consider a tripod for low-light conditions or capturing the steam effectively. Work with your guide to find the best vantage points and safe spots for photography.

The Thrill of the Hike: Navigating the Boiling Lake Trail
Safety is paramount, and this is why hiring a local guide is non-negotiable. Trails are often poorly marked, and the conditions can change rapidly. Guides are not only essential for navigation but also for understanding the volcanic activity and ensuring you avoid hazardous areas. They can also point out unique flora and fauna, enriching your experience. Many visitors describe the hike as 'Type 2 fun' – challenging in the moment but incredibly rewarding and memorable afterward.
When preparing for this trek, proper footwear is critical. Shoes that can get thoroughly wet and muddy are a must, as you'll be crossing streams and navigating slick paths. Consider bringing a change of socks and a towel. While the Boiling Lake itself is too hot to enter, there are smaller, cooler hot springs along the way where you can soothe tired muscles. Remember to pack plenty of water and high-energy snacks, as there are no facilities once you start the hike.
Dominica's Volcanic Heart: Understanding Boiling Lake
The lake's existence is a testament to Dominica's active volcanic geology. Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to this natural wonder and showcases the island's dramatic volcanic landscapes. Visitors can witness firsthand the raw power of geothermal activity, from the steaming vents in the Valley of Desolation to the very lake itself. The surrounding area also bears the marks of past eruptions, with visible lava flows adding to the dramatic scenery.
While the lake is a spectacular sight, its extreme heat makes it inaccessible for swimming. However, the journey to the lake offers opportunities to experience geothermal features more safely. Smaller hot springs and streams along the trail provide a chance to interact with the island's volcanic warmth, offering a unique, albeit temporary, 'spa' experience amidst the challenging trek.
