What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking panoramic views from the summit and the serene beauty of the botanical gardens. The Christ the Redeemer statue is an iconic highlight. However, the frequent closure of the cable car and the challenging road conditions for vehicles are recurring points of concern.
"We went for the first time and were lucky to see the Christ the Redeemer without any fog. You need a powerful vehicle to make the climb, but once you’re up there, you’ll enjoy it—it’s incredible. Surprisingly, no one talks about the huge garden behind it, which was spectacular. We really enjoyed it, and the staff’s attention and explanations were excellent and professional. Best of all, it was free."

"This is such a beautiful place and a terrific site to see if you're in Puerto Plata. The teleférico wasn't working while we were there (I think it's been under repairs for a while now) but it's worth the drive.
But you might need a four wheel drive, the road is so so steep going up there the car barely made it and we were in a Honda CRV.
Once there there is, of course, a gift shop and some nicer bathrooms too. There are paths all over the mountain through the gardens and the plants are really beautiful. There were butterflies and birds and the temperature is cool with a great breeze. The view from the top is great and the statue is also a good thing to see.
The Casita Típico, or traditional house is pretty authentic and great to see. There's even a tiny cave and pavilion and lots of seating.
We had a great time and would recommend the excursion!"

"Overall 5/5*
After several days in DR - we had a wonderful trip towards the national park. It was amazing how relaxed the atmosphere was on top. Great refreshing weather condition as well as … silence. Take your time to stroll around in the park. I would plan 1-2 hours, that’s enough.
Recommended"

Navigating the Ascent: Cable Car vs. Road
If the cable car isn't running, driving is the alternative. The road is steep and winding, requiring a powerful vehicle. Many visitors recommend a 4x4 or a robust SUV, as standard cars may struggle with the incline. For those seeking an adventure and who prefer not to drive, guided tours often utilize safari trucks, providing a more rugged but equally exciting ascent. Hiking is also an option, but it's best undertaken with a local guide for safety and navigation.
Exploring the Summit's Treasures
Beyond the statue, the park boasts spectacular botanical gardens. These lush, well-maintained grounds are a haven of diverse flora, providing a refreshing and tranquil escape. Visitors often rave about the cool temperatures and the vibrant greenery, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. The panoramic views from the summit are truly breathtaking, encompassing the colorful city of Puerto Plata, the sparkling turquoise waters of the Atlantic, and the rolling green hills of the surrounding landscape. On clear days, the vistas are unparalleled, offering a sweeping perspective of the Dominican coastline.
Beyond the Mountain: Puerto Plata's Charm
For those seeking beach adventures, areas like Playa La Ensenada are frequently recommended for their clear waters and white sands, offering a picturesque escape. Adventure seekers can explore options like ziplining over the ocean or taking buggy rides, showcasing the diverse activities available in the region. Puerto Plata provides a well-rounded travel experience, from mountain vistas to coastal relaxation and historical exploration.
