What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Punta Cana Airport (PUJ) is generally seen as clean and efficient, with helpful staff, though the arrival process of deplaning onto the tarmac and taking a bus is a unique experience. While departure areas are air-conditioned, arrivals can be warm, and the airport lacks authentic Dominican food options. Travelers advise caution regarding aggressive sales pitches for tours and transport immediately after baggage claim.
"This airport is very clean, efficient, and helpful for tourists that may not speak Spanish. They have availability to assist passengers that may have disabilities or the necessity for a wheelchair. They have an assortment of options for food, such as Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Cinnabon, and Nathan‘s. I was hoping they would have a food vendor with authentic Dominican food, but they did not. Bathrooms are relatively clean, TSA was slightly messy and unorganized, although efficient enough if on a time crunch."

"Overall my experience was good. The airport was definitely different than what I have experienced. The plane unloads on the tarmac and does not pull up to a gate. They bring the stairs/ramp over to you and then you take a bus to get over to customs. Inside the airport the luggage came out quick but there were a lot of sales people as you try to leave the airport selling tours and transportation. I was looking for our car service and was very annoyed I thought we found them and the girl escorted us to a whole different company trying to sell tours and hotels. On the way back to the airport the experience was not as great. They are outdated with no intercom system and we could not hear the attendance over the crowds of people when our group was called. We again had to take a bus to take to the plane. This part was not great because they had two sets for stairs to get on the plane and we had to carry the luggage up the stairs. The backs stairs did not have a ramp. It was a beautiful day out and I wondered what the experience would be had it rained there was no coverage. Overall decent experience compared to other airports I have been to but they definitely need a few upgrades especially an intercom system."

"Not a very big airport. No air conditioning on arrival at baggage claim area. No air brigades. Deplaning and boarding done with the use of busses or on foot between the airplane and the terminal. They use the mobile ramps instead of the jet stairs with much easier way to get on it if the aircraft. Departure and check-in areas are air conditioned. Few duty free stores in departure area. Few fast food restaurants like Wendy's, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and few others. A little open terrace area at the food court popular with smokers. Not like there is a better choice. It is what it is."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For departures, the boarding process might also involve buses and stairs, so comfortable shoes are a must. The airport offers familiar fast-food chains, which can be a lifesaver for picky eaters. While the baggage claim area can be warm, the departure lounges are air-conditioned, offering a comfortable space to wait for your flight.
💰 Budget Travelers
While the airport has fast-food options, consider bringing snacks or purchasing them outside the airport if you're looking for more budget-friendly food choices. The airport itself doesn't offer significant cost-saving amenities beyond the standard duty-free shopping.
♿ Travelers with Mobility Issues
Be aware that deplaning and boarding often involve buses and stairs, which might require extra assistance. Communicate your needs clearly to airport staff and your airline to ensure a smoother experience navigating these transitions.

Navigating the Arrival Process
Immediately after collecting your luggage, you'll enter an area bustling with representatives from various tour operators and transportation services. This can be overwhelming, and some travelers have reported being misled by individuals trying to sell tours or escort them to different companies. It's crucial to have your pre-arranged transfer details clearly in hand and to politely but firmly decline unsolicited offers. Staying focused on finding your designated meeting point will ensure a smoother transition to your resort.
Departure Experience and Amenities
For those looking to pass the time before their flight, the departure area offers a selection of duty-free shops and familiar fast-food restaurants like Wendy's, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut. There's also an open-air terrace, a popular spot for smokers. While the airport is described as clean and organized, some reviews mention a lack of an intercom system, making announcements difficult to hear over the general crowd noise. This can lead to confusion during boarding calls.
Accessibility and Family Travel
For families traveling with children, the unique arrival and departure processes should be considered. The bus transfers and potential use of stairs require extra attention when managing luggage and young ones. While the airport has familiar fast-food options that can be a hit with kids, the lack of authentic local cuisine might be a minor drawback for some. The key for families is preparation: confirm all transfer details and pack essentials for comfort during the transit phases.
