What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the museum to have some interesting archaeological finds and a good display of Saraguro textiles. However, many note that only a small portion of the collection is exhibited, and there's a lack of English information. The museum's specific opening hours, including a midday closure, are a common point of frustration for those who arrive unprepared.
"It has changed its name to the museum of Lojanidad. It is at the entrance of the Universitad Technical Particular de Loja. Ask the taxi driver to take you to this university because it is more well known than the museum. It is right above the city gates. You can see the campus with its big buildings and murals from the city gate. The museum had only one floor open when I went. It was closed for the afternoon and opened at 3. There were a few archaeological finds, and a section demonstrating the textiles/costumes/weaving of the Saraguro people. Nothing special. The archaeological finds at the city gates museum were more interesting. This museum can be safely missed. Unless there is something special on the floors I was not able to see."

"This small museum has a few very nice pieces of ancient artifacts. However, they only have about 100 of their 4000 piece collection on display. We wish they made more of the collection available."

Understanding the Collection
One of the key exhibits highlights the distinct textiles, costumes, and weaving techniques of the Saraguro people. This section provides insight into their traditional craftsmanship and cultural identity. While some visitors found these displays interesting, others felt the overall collection was not particularly special, especially when compared to other local historical sites. The museum's location at the entrance of the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL) also means visitors can potentially explore the university campus, which features large buildings and murals.
Visitor Experience and Practicalities
Navigating to the museum is best done by asking for the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), as this landmark is more widely recognized by taxi drivers than the museum itself. While the museum is described as small but nice by some, others suggest it can be safely missed unless there's a special exhibition on the upper floors that were not accessible during their visit. The overall sentiment is that while there are some interesting pieces, the limited display and lack of multilingual information might temper expectations for some travelers.
