"On the northeast side of the Parque Pedro Vicente Maldonado is the catedral de San Pedro de Riobamba, the main church of the diocese of the same name. This Roman Catholic church with its simply designed interior is mainly notable for its Baroque facade, decorated with many medallions. After the old cathedral was destroyed in 1797 by the most severe earthquake in Ecuadorian history (8.3 on the Richter Scale), the current church was built between 1810 and 1835. The cathedral, especially the facade, is one of the finest examples of Plateresque architecture and with a mix of indigenous and colonial elements."
