"TEMPLE OF SAN ALFONSO
The Missionary Fathers of the Most Holy Redeemer settled in Riobamba on July 15, 1870, in the convent and church of San Agustín. On May 4, 1871, the church was demolished, and a small chapel was built for worship.
In 1872, construction began on the Temple of San Alfonso, with the help of the people of Riobamba, providing financial resources and carrying all kinds of materials. The work lasted eight years under the leadership of priests Pedro Didier, Pedro López, and Antonio Yenger. The architects were the Redemptorist brothers Vicente Lindner and Teófilo Richert.
In 1880, the work was completed; the inauguration celebrations were solemn. The official consecration took place on April 17, 1881, and was presided over by the Apostolic Delegate, Dr. Mario Mocenni.
In 1905, the Redemptorites were violently expelled from the country. Through the efforts of a commission of women from Riobamba, they were gradually returned to continue their pastoral and missionary mission.
The church displays the Neo-Gothic and Romanesque styles of the period; it has walls, an interior archway, rose windows, and an iron roof. The main façade features two tall, conical, wooden towers. Its interior features a beautiful altar covered in gold leaf, along with paintings and images of great artistic value, including the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the statue of Saint Alphonsus Liguori.
