What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Bellavista Lava Tunnels a fascinating and worthwhile stop, especially when combined with nearby tortoise reserves. The unique geological formations and the adventurous crawl section are highlights, though some find the heat and humidity intense. It's a quick but memorable experience offering a glimpse into volcanic landscapes.
"Weather conditions were right for our tour group to explore a small lava tunnel in Santa Cruz. It was not far from the Manzanillo farm , unmarked and was free to enter. There were wooden staircases at the tunnel's entrance and exit. On the way in, we spotted a Galapagos barn owl nesting in a nook in the cave wall. We used our camera flashlights for illumination. It only took a few minutes for us to come out the other side of the tunnel."

"A must visit. It is part of the giant tortoise facility and one pays at the reserve for both. It was $8.50 pa. Very good value.
The actual lava tunnel walk is one way and is around 400m walk. There are 2 very low, ie you have to crawl through, however well worth the effort. We did the walk from the exit to the start which our taxi driver suggested. Good move. One goes down the steps into the tunnel, through the 2 very low arches, but then it is just a beautiful walk through the lava tunnel."

"There is a first part, fully lighted and developed for turists and the second one, that starts as a hole just after you get out of the First One, up by the stairs.
The Second one is very slipy, steap and it was floodef by water. I have no idea about the sides stability
You need a proper lamp
Beware! Its a light speleo. Not for all!"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
The Bellavista Lava Tunnels are located on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos. They are often found near the giant tortoise reserves like Rancho Primícias. Taxis are a common way to reach the site from Puerto Ayora.
Some sources mention the tunnels can be unmarked, so it's best to ask your taxi driver or inquire at your accommodation. They are often part of a larger natural reserve.
Taxis are readily available in Puerto Ayora and can take you to the lava tunnels. Renting a car is also an option for more flexibility in exploring Santa Cruz.
While some parts are developed for tourists, the experience can be self-guided. It's advisable to check with local tour operators or your hotel for any organized tours that might include the tunnels.
The distance can vary depending on the specific tunnel entrance, but they are generally accessible within a reasonable taxi ride from Puerto Ayora, often combined with visits to tortoise ranches.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
Entry fees can vary. Some sources mention around $6 USD for the lit tunnel, while others indicate it's included with the entrance fee to a nearby giant tortoise reserve, costing about $8.50 per person.
Generally, advance booking isn't required for the lava tunnels themselves, especially if you're visiting independently. If part of a tour, booking through the operator would be necessary.
Operating hours are not always strictly defined, as some sections are natural. It's best to visit during daylight hours for safety and visibility. If combined with a reserve, check their specific hours.
There are often multiple access points. Some are developed with staircases, while others might be more natural holes. The main tourist section is usually well-marked.
While some very basic, unmarked tunnels might be accessible for free, the developed and safer sections, especially those near tortoise reserves, typically have an entrance fee.
🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
The main lit tunnel is approximately 400 meters long. The experience can be completed relatively quickly, often taking just a few minutes to walk through.
The main tunnel is accessible, but there's a very low section requiring crawling or rolling, which might be challenging for some. The terrain can also be slippery and wet.
Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip. Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended due to the warm and humid conditions.
Yes, a flashlight or headlamp is highly recommended, especially for exploring beyond the main lit section or if you want to spot wildlife like owls.

📸 📸 Photography
Use a flashlight or your camera's flash to illuminate the dark interiors. Focus on the textures of the lava rock and any unique formations. Capturing the scale of the tunnels can be challenging but rewarding.
Yes, keep an eye out for nesting Galapagos barn owls in the nooks. A quick flash can help capture them, but be mindful not to disturb them.
Experiment with low-light settings. A wider aperture (lower f-number) can help capture more light. Using a tripod might be difficult due to space, so a steady hand or image stabilization is key.
The entrances and exits often provide good vantage points. The crawl section, while challenging, can also lead to unique photographic opportunities if you can manage your gear.
Expect very low natural light. The main tourist path is lit, but other areas are completely dark, requiring artificial light sources for any photography.
