Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the Cairo Citadel's breathtaking panoramic views and the magnificent architecture, especially Muhammad Ali's Mosque. It's considered a must-see historical site offering a powerful sense of history. However, some solo travelers have reported unsettling security encounters, and transportation to and from the site can be challenging.

"A fantastic place with a beautiful view over all of Cairo.
We went up with a small car to avoid walking in the heat.
The view is absolutely rewarding, as is the magnificent fortress with its imposing mosque.
It is definitely a must-see!"

"I absolutely love the Saladin Citadel. It’s one of my favorite historical sites in Egypt. The architecture is breathtaking, and the sense of history is truly powerful—you can feel the weight of centuries in every stone. Walking through its courtyards and looking out over the city is an unforgettable experience.

That said, my visit was tainted by a strange encounter with security at the entrance. I was stopped for my ID, which is fine, but then I was asked a series of weird and intrusive questions—like “Why are you here?” and “Are you meeting anyone?” They even asked if I live in Egypt. To make things worse, they held onto my ID and told me I wasn’t allowed to enter alone. Eventually, they did let me in, but I had to retrieve my ID on the way out.

It was honestly unsettling. I came to enjoy a historic site, not be interrogated like I did something wrong. The Citadel deserves better visitor management—especially for solo guests.

Still, the site itself is worth visiting. Just be prepared for some unexpected questioning if you’re going alone."

"Spacious and quiet — great for photos, but hard to reach.
The castle is large and not crowded, making it a great spot for taking portrait photos. However, transportation is a challenge — we had to wait a long time to get a taxi."
