Reviews Summary

The Museum of Fine Arts Alexandria is praised for its impressive, though modest, collection of Egyptian and European art, offering a surprisingly rich experience for its affordable price. Visitors appreciate the historical depth, with works dating back centuries, and recommend it as an underrated gem. However, some note that certain halls are empty or undergoing restoration, and minor issues with presentation and facilities have been mentioned.

"Nice museum with modest collection, it houses a collection of works by Egyptian artist and a selection of works from Baroque, Romanticism, Rococo and Orientalism. In addition, noteworthy examples of carving, printing and sculpture from Egyptian and European artists.

The museum was established in 1904 when Alexandria Municipal Authorities received a collection of paintings as a gift from Edward Farid Heim. The collection consisted of 210 pieces by international artists.

In 1936, French trader, Baron Félix de Menasce , donated a villa in Alexandria's Moharram Bek area to be used as a library and a gallery for the exhibition of artworks. The building was destroyed in the Second World War and the municipality had to store the artworks in another location until another museum had been established.

There are two criticisms i want to address, one of the staff told me you can only take maximum of 3 photos of the museum, only if it’s a selfie then i’m free to take how many i want, he argued that such decision is aiming to attract more visitors and not showcase everything online, which i completely disagree with.

The second point is that many halls of the museum are empty and some works are not presented in the best way possible. More care to such an important museum will take the place a long way.

I recommend coming here and highlight the place so it receives more attention and care."

"The Museum of Fine Arts in Alexandria is a fantastic experience. Both the temporary and regular exhibitions are incredibly interesting. While the collection doesn’t feature a large number of paintings or sculptures, it is still definitely worth the visit. The museum is located in a great spot, and the staff is amazingly helpful. Plus, the entry fee is just 25 EGP, making it an excellent value for money."

"Underrated. Almost nobody I know knows this museum. It's larger than I thought with paintings going back to 1600s.

German, French, Italian painters have their original art works in here and other nationalities, some of which are international and well-known. Egyptian iconic artists also have very interesting works of art.

Some of the second floor is being restored; about 1/3 of the paintings are temporarily not shown.

- 5 EGP for Egyptian students.
- Closed on Mondays and Fridays for maintenance."

A Glimpse into the Collection's History

The Museum of Fine Arts Alexandria boasts a rich history, originating from a significant donation in 1904 by Edward Farid Heim, which comprised 210 international artworks. This foundational collection laid the groundwork for what would become a vital cultural institution in the city. The museum's journey involved a relocation in 1936 to a villa donated by Baron Félix de Menasce, intended to serve as both a library and an art gallery. However, this building was tragically destroyed during World War II, necessitating the temporary storage of artworks until a new, permanent home could be established. Reddit

Today, the museum houses a curated selection of works, including pieces from prominent Egyptian artists and a diverse range of European art. Visitors can explore styles spanning Baroque, Romanticism, and Rococo, alongside Orientalist influences. The collection also extends to noteworthy examples of carving, printing, and sculpture, showcasing the breadth of artistic expression from both Egyptian and international creators. Despite its historical significance, some visitors note that certain halls are currently empty or undergoing restoration, with a portion of the collection temporarily unavailable. TikTokReddit

Navigating the Museum Experience

Visiting the Museum of Fine Arts Alexandria offers a unique opportunity to engage with art in a less crowded environment compared to larger, more famous institutions. Many visitors describe the museum as 'underrated' and a 'neglected greatness,' urging others to visit and bring it more attention. The modest collection is appreciated for its quality, featuring original paintings and sculptures that span centuries, with some pieces dating back to the 1600s. Reddit

However, the visitor experience isn't without its critiques. The condition of the restrooms has also been mentioned as an area needing improvement. Despite these points, the overall sentiment is positive, with many recommending the museum for art enthusiasts and those seeking a different kind of cultural exploration in Alexandria.
