Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Santa Lucía Church for its historical significance, architectural beauty, and its role as the heart of the charming town of Suchitoto. Many appreciate the old-world Spanish ambiance and the well-preserved structure. Some note that the church shows signs of age and could benefit from maintenance, but this doesn't detract significantly from the overall positive experience.

"Although I am no longer a Catholic, I enjoy visiting local Catholic churches because they are integral to the historical fabric of every town in the area. While the church shows signs of needing maintenance, I am confident these issues will be addressed.

The church, built in the 1800s, still appears to be in good shape. The altar is made of wood, giving it an old Spanish feel. The beautifully decorated ceiling boasts a height of approximately 100 feet. Compared to other churches in the country, this one is long and narrow. It is open to the public from early morning until around 4 or 5 PM. It is advisable to plan on parking on the side of the church or outside the plaza, as the church and plaza are interconnected, and no vehicles are allowed in front of the church.

This church, has recently celebrated its 44th anniversary as a National Monument. Officially recognized in May 25, 1978, the parish holds significant architectural and historical value in Suchitoto and is one of the oldest buildings in the area.

The church is situated on a rectangular block, with an atrium in front of its main façade, enclosed by a fence formed by small square columns topped with pyramid-shaped elements. The main façade features a hexastyle portico supported by six Ionic columns, which in turn support an entablature and a small terrace bordered by a patterned grid.

At the rear of the church, the façade wall rises above three entrances, framed by double semicircular arches, with the central arch being the most prominent. The upper part of the façade includes three niches divided by small pilasters. At the top, a triangular pediment holds a clock in the center, above which is a bell tower topped by a cupola with a cross.

Flanking the pediment are two towers: the northern one contains a vibraphone, while the southern one is a bell tower, both covered by cupolas. The parish church has two side entrances; the northern entrance bears an inscription from 1859. It is constructed of adobe, with the main façade and domes made of limestone. The roof consists of clay tiles supported by wooden trusses, sporting a gabled design, except for the chapels, which feature half-orange vaults with a cupola or lantern.

The parish church has a rectangular basilical layout, measuring 68 meters long, 24 meters wide, and 29 meters high at the main façade. It contains three naves, with the central nave being larger than the side naves, which are separated by arcades supported by circular wooden columns on stone bases.

It also has two adjoining chapels perpendicular to the naves: the larger one, dedicated to the Sacred Heart, is located to the south, while the smaller one, dedicated to the Lord of Mercy, is to the north. The church's floor features a colorful mosaic with various figures.

The declaration of the parish as a National Monument was published in Official Gazette No. 114, Volume No. 259, dated June 20, 1978."
