What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Angla Windmill Hill is praised for its picturesque windmills, offering a quintessential Estonian countryside experience. Visitors enjoy exploring the preserved mills and the surrounding historical farm equipment. However, some find the museum's educational content could be more detailed.
"1 | An interesting open-air museum dominated by four photogenic windmills. This is exactly how I imagined the Estonian countryside before seeing it with my own eyes.
2 | We visited in mid-October on a Sunday afternoon and nobody was inside, so unfortunately we could only look from the outside. There is a large parking lot right at the entrance, and you can view the windmills from the road behind a wooden fence. Just watch out for passing cars. Even so, it was worth stopping here.
3 | The entrance fee is €8. Inside, you can try traditional Estonian crafts (weaving, pottery) or taste baked rye bread.
4 | The oldest preserved windmill dates back to 1880 and the youngest to 1927. In the 1920s, there were originally nine windmills here, but not all have survived. Unlike traditional Dutch windmills, these mills have their upper structure made of wood as well."

"A neat and nice museum with all repaired windmills. Two of the windmills are available for viewing inside, mechanisms and all, extremely interesting! Museum was nice to look at, but the educational and entertainment value was rather low, with no provenance and historical context offered of displayed items, and open machines with a small sign that touching them is prohibited. Not good for either kids or adults."

"The windmill is the symbol of Saaremaa, and the best place to see them is the Angla Windmill Park. On top of this hill there were already nine mills in the early 16th century, today there are only four 19th century smaller mills and one early 20th century Dutch-style mill. When you are done taking pictures outside (there are also several tractors and other farm machinery on display), you can learn more about the local culture in the adjacent Heritage Culture Center, or enjoy a bite to eat and a drink. A nice destination!"
