What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Museum of New Art in Pärnu offers a mixed bag of experiences, with its temporary exhibitions and immersive art spaces often praised for their visual appeal and contemporary nature. However, some visitors find certain older sections to be dated and not worth the entry fee, leading to varied opinions on overall value.
"Always happy to visit, each year when visiting Pärnu it’s the one gallery to go. It’s also possible to buy from the selection of exhibits but you need to be fast to get better selection. Very often there are multiple exhibitions at the same time."

"Many museums in Estonia used to just be dusty rooms with someone's old crap on display and old ladies guarding the coats. Sadly, the downstairs gallery at this museum is still that way. I went to the "Metslased" exhibit, because I'm a major fan of Kaupo Kikkas's photography. But this "gallery" turned out to be just an old bank which has never been renovated--security cameras still hang above the filthy, worn carpeting where the tellers stood. The lighting has never been updated, which hardly matters since the staff did not turn on the lights even after we asked. The art is poorly displayed and difficult to see in the cave-like darkness of this, um, gallery. Kikkas' photos are great as expected, but the others on display, while they may have historic value in cataloguing trees, are not worthy of an art gallery. Their reproduction quality is poor and they are cheaply mounted on foamcore and stuck to the wall with nails. Things used to be cheap in Estonia, and so it wasn't a big deal if you paid for something and were disappointed. But things have changed now. They should pay you to visit this gallery, not the other way around. What can I say that's nice? The lady selling tickets was nice, but the downstairs gallery is a ripoff that the City of Pärnu ought to shutter."

"The new location in the very center of Pärnu is excellent, and so are this little museum's temporary exhibitions. I enjoy a visit almost every time I'm in town, and suggest you try it out, too. I't not expensive, either, and so visitor friendly in all aspects."

While the museum is praised for its temporary exhibitions, some older sections have received criticism for feeling dated and poorly maintained, with issues like dim lighting and unrenovated spaces. This contrast means your experience might depend heavily on which parts of the museum you explore. Checking recent visitor photos or reviews can give you a better idea of what to expect.

Remember to be mindful of other visitors and any specific photography rules posted within the museum to ensure everyone can enjoy the art.
Understanding Visitor Value and Expectations
However, it's important to balance this with the positive feedback. The museum is described as a place that visitors are 'always happy to visit' and a 'must' when in Pärnu. The temporary exhibitions are frequently cited as a strong point, offering fresh perspectives and engaging content. For art enthusiasts looking for cutting-edge contemporary art and immersive installations, the museum can be a rewarding destination. The advice from Reddit users to research current exhibitions is crucial for managing expectations and ensuring a satisfying visit.
Ultimately, whether the Museum of New Art offers good value depends on individual priorities. If you are drawn to immersive art experiences, digital installations, and contemporary photography, and you're prepared for a potentially varied experience across different sections of the museum, it can be a worthwhile stop. For those on a tighter budget or seeking a more consistently polished museum experience, it might be worth weighing the cost against other attractions.
