What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Church of the Cross for its stunning Alvar Aalto architecture, particularly the warm, minimalist wooden interior. Many find it a peaceful sanctuary for reflection, appreciating the thoughtful design and its integration with the surrounding environment. Some note that its architectural significance isn't as widely publicized as other Lahti landmarks.
"Truly, the house of God is surrounded by wonderful and welcoming people."
Ritchie Dilshan
"This church is one of those rather inconspicuous gems that one tends to overlook (we had to search for a long time to find any references to the architect in the church, call it typical Finnish understatement). Yet the architect was none other than the legendary Alvar Aalto. It was one of his last works, unfortunately he could not witness the inauguration of Ristinkirkko in 1978 in Lahti - he died two years earlier. In Ristinkirkko Aalto took over very few elements of the old church (it was demolished). The rest is typical Aalto for me: clarity, brightness, elegance. We had the opportunity to look at the building, designed already in the fifties, alone and in all silence. In short: architecturally a delicacy, but also a wonderful place to come to rest."
Laurenz Büschel
"Compact but beautiful geometrical forms masterfully crafted by Alvar Aalto, highly contextual to its surroundings - the park, the hill and the street. The architectural models and the photos at the basement reveal its process."
