What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Stora Herrö as a magnificent natural escape, perfect for day trips and camping. Highlights include the observation tower's views, the sandy beach, and the abundance of summer blueberries. While the rugged trails and limited amenities require preparation, the island offers a peaceful and authentic archipelago experience.
"We took a daytrip boat ride leaving Otaniemi at 09:00 and arrived at the island 11:15. Great trails yo walk, make sure to wear proper shoes as fallen trees, tree roots or rocks to climb cross your paths.
The observation tower in the east part is just 10min hike from the pier, after that we followed the trails on the south shore (private land is marked with colored ropes hanging between branches, please respect) to a nice fine sand beach.
Five minutes further we reached our shelter aka campsite which has a small beach with two swings, firewood shelter, a fire place, benches and tables and wooden planked surfaces for camping on it...max camp is 6 days
Dont forget to pick blue berries during summer, the island is full of them...ferry back at 14:45 so 3,5h on the island were sufficient for a daytrip"

"A perfect small escape during the Finnish summer! As a foreigner and a first-timer in Finland, this place is magnificent."

"Went here for a camping trip with the family and dog - it's a lovely island within 1 hour water bus ride from Espoo, with dedicated camping area. Really enjoyed this place - sunny, rough grounded forest with little paths going around the island, not too many mosquitos. Not suited for bikes or wheelchairs, nor mobility reduced people. On camp site there's a covered cooking area with a fire place, dry fire wood and axe provided, picnic tables, rubbish bins and a swing set. Pitching the tent was a bit tricky, as there is very limited number of flat areas where one can place the tent hooks into ground. There were wooden platforms for tents, but we couldn't use those. There is no drinking water on the island and no washing facilities - only the sea. A great place for a weekend trip."
