"The first written mention of St. Catherine's Church dates back to 1309. The current grey stone church was built between 1440 and 1460. The church was to be built with two naves and a tower, which is why the church is somewhat unique inside. According to legend, on the south side of the altar is a wooden sculpture of Catherine of Alexandria, who lived in Alexandria at the end of the 3rd century. It was made in Gotland in the 14th century and was damaged in a fire at the end of the Middle Ages. A beautiful and peaceful church."

This was not a common characteristic for churches built in the 15th century, making this medieval stone structure quite unique. The construction, which took place between 1440 and 1460, aimed for a two-nave layout and a tower, contributing to its singular interior. This design creates a sense of spaciousness and a different flow compared to single-nave churches, offering visitors a memorable visual experience. Reddit

The simplicity and harmony of its Gothic architecture are also noteworthy. The interior is characterized by wooden pews and a wooden ceiling, which contribute to a warm and cozy atmosphere. This blend of robust stone exterior and inviting wooden interior elements showcases the craftsmanship of the medieval period. Reddit

When exploring the church, take a moment to appreciate how this unique layout impacts the acoustics and the overall feeling of the space. It’s a testament to the builders’ vision and a key reason why St. Catherine's stands out among historical Finnish churches. Reddit
