Reviews Summary

Musée Fesch is lauded for its impressive and diverse art collection, particularly its Italian 18th-century works and Napoleonic artifacts. While the museum's layout and thematic organization are appreciated, some visitors have found the staff's attitude towards families to be unwelcoming, detracting from an otherwise excellent cultural experience.

"The chapel was included, but overrated; the actual museum was fantastic though! Recommendation for improvement is to either add a translation to the text (or a QR code).

What I loved about the museum was the depth of artwork it presented; it didn't have an overwhelming religious focus. Instead it sectioned each floor with a different focus: Corsica art in the basement, Napoleon Bonaparte and Bonaparte family on the ground floor, religious focus at the first floor that was mostly Christian themed, but did have some pagan themes, and everyday life artwork on the second floor."

Adam Waymouth

"If you are an art lover you are going to be engaged but not bowled over. Not the highlight one hopes for but there are some works from famous names and a lot of division two. Centre of old Ajaccio so you are going to visit but don't pin your holiday on it. Like so often en France, the beat is in Paris. The Bonaparte fetish is also in full swing which, despite the fact the locals don't like the guy, they milk him for all his ermine clad imperial worth."

"Impressive art collection well displayed."

The Fesch Legacy: Art and Napoleon

The Musée Fesch is a testament to the legacy of Joseph Fesch, Napoleon Bonaparte's uncle and a cardinal. Established in the 19th century, it houses one of the most significant art collections in Corsica. The museum's architecture itself, a grand palace, adds to the visitor experience, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the era. Reddit

Visitors often highlight the diverse thematic organization of the museum. Unlike collections with a singular focus, Musée Fesch dedicates different floors to distinct subjects. This includes a notable collection of Corsican art in the basement, a comprehensive display of Napoleonic history on the ground floor, and a significant array of religious art, particularly Italian 18th-century works, on the first floor. The second floor often features art depicting everyday life, providing a well-rounded artistic journey. Reddit

While the museum is praised for its impressive collection, some reviews mention an inconsistent family concept. Despite efforts to engage younger visitors with pamphlets, experiences with staff have sometimes been reported as unwelcoming. This can be a point of consideration for families planning their visit, balancing the educational value with the potential for a less-than-ideal interaction. Reddit

Navigating the Collections: What to Expect

The Musée Fesch is structured to guide visitors through various artistic and historical periods. The ground floor is a must-see for anyone interested in the Bonaparte family, featuring numerous portraits and artifacts that chronicle their rise and influence. This section is particularly popular for its direct connection to Napoleon. Reddit

Moving up, the first floor is a treasure trove for art connoisseurs, housing one of the finest collections of Italian 18th-century art outside of Paris. This is where you'll find works by renowned masters, offering a deep dive into the artistic currents of the period. The basement offers a dedicated space for Corsican art, allowing visitors to connect with the island's unique artistic heritage and local artists. Reddit

For a broader perspective, the second floor often showcases art that captures everyday life, providing a contrast to the more formal collections. While the chapel is also part of the museum experience, some visitors find it less compelling than the main galleries. Planning your visit by floor can help maximize your time and ensure you see the sections that interest you most. Reddit
