Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Saint-Jacques Church for its beautiful and bright interior, highlighting its Greco-Roman architectural style and the charm of the adjacent Saint-Jacques Fountain. The 'Christmas in Provence' exhibition is a popular seasonal attraction. Some visitors note the church's history of damage and restoration.

"Magnificient"

Antonio PALAZZO

"In the 13th century, a conflict broke out between the Abbot of Saint-Corneille and the Bishop of Soissons.
The Pope had to intervene to settle this dispute: he appointed a commission to decide on the construction of the parish church of Saint-Jacques.

Originally built outside the city, the building was restored in the 1470s.

Faced with the growing population of Amiens, and perhaps dilapidated, the church underwent work from 1837 to 1841, according to plans by François-Auguste Cheussey, architect of the municipal library.

In 1839, it was enclosed by the gates of the old Saint-Denis, which have since disappeared. The new church was consecrated in 1841.

However, in August 1857, a fire destroyed part of the building, and further repairs took place from 1858 to 1861.

The two World Wars caused considerable damage.

The Saint-Jacques, built in the Greco-Roman style with four columns, was restored again starting in 1964.

Opposite the church stands the "Saint-Jacques Fountain."

From 1750 onwards, the engineer Bélidor led the project to install seven public fountains in Amiens, supplied with drinking water by the newly built water tower in the port of Aval.

In April 1754, the municipality received permission to purchase at least five houses on Rue Saint-Jacques and demolish them to build the fountain.

It is a stone work decorated with a bronze masquerade depicting the head of Saint-Jacques-Le-Major."
