What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Ermitage Notre-Dame de Vie Argelès for its beautiful, well-maintained path and the absolutely breathtaking panoramic views from the chapel, especially at sunrise. However, a significant concern for some is the presence of a potentially aggressive dog belonging to the caretaker, which has caused distress and fear among some visitors, impacting their experience.
"A wonderful discovery. A pleasant walk, no need to be an expert hiker. The path and area are well-maintained, with its small chapel. Beautiful view upon arrival."

"A magnificent walk with just one downside. During my visits twice the guard was present with a very very impressive German Shepherd dog, he is not tied up, nor kept on a leash, he runs towards you with his mouth open and stops 5 cm from one of your limbs. This dog is absolutely not controlled by his master, the latter does not seem to be aware of the fear that his dog arouses. I met a few hikers who know this difficulty and stay at the foot of the peak where this beautiful chapel is located and turn around, especially when they also have a dog. From my point of view, this is a problem to be dealt with. This is the first time that a guard has scared away visitors.....(Fortunately, he is not always present, because I believe he sometimes works outside)"

"A beautiful view, but nothing extraordinary. I've seen better in the Basque Country, walking down the Rhune, passing a shepherd.
However, the old hermit would do better to keep a closer eye on his mutt and not let him attack people. The dog approaches dangerously and is very, very aggressive, baring its teeth, and the old man stays on his balcony without moving, telling him "calm down."
With families and children who are scared, it's unacceptable and very dangerous! I put my family behind me to block the situation and was ready to intervene. I would have suffered, but the dog would no longer be here!
I also see in the older comments that another person was also attacked by this dog. If I hadn't had the children behind me, I would have taken out the blade that I use to defend myself against dangerous dogs on walks, and he would have taken it, that's for sure!"
