Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Saint-Trophime Cloister for its beautiful preservation and intricate medieval artistry, particularly the detailed biblical sculptures on the columns. Many recommend visiting as part of a multi-site pass for better value. Some note a lack of English information and suggest improvements to the central courtyard's landscaping.

"I really loved this place it's another destination if you buy the 19 euro Pass Advantage for access to all the ancient sites in Arles. Well worth the expense. There's something about a cloister. It's a very serene environment even though men or women of the cloth no longer live there. Maybe it's the residue of their prayer and devotion. Go to the top, sit in the shade and pray or meditate."

Dominic Carpin

"4.5 - very good condition and if you look closely at the columns, each has a different scene from the Bible. It’s just very small but it is worth it if you get the pack of tickets. I would’ve rated it a 5 if they did something to the middle to spruce up the place lol it’s all dead foliage and we visited in spring lol get some water and fertilizer in there and it would be a 5 from me"

"Beautiful cloitre, with quite a bit of ancient sculpture nearly intact and still showing the intricate details. I actually prefer the church itself, which is also free, but I think this is worth a visit, particularly if you like stonework"

Architectural Marvel: Gothic Meets Romanesque

Saint-Trophime Cloister is a fascinating example of architectural evolution, showcasing a harmonious blend of two distinct medieval styles. The Romanesque elements are evident in the sturdy, rounded arches and the robust columns, characteristic of the earlier period. As you move through the cloister, you'll notice the transition to Gothic influences, marked by more pointed arches and a sense of verticality, though it's a subtle integration rather than a stark contrast. This dual architectural personality makes the cloister a unique study for enthusiasts and a visually rich experience for all visitors. Reddit

One of the most striking features is the sculptural program adorning the cloister's columns. Each capital is a miniature masterpiece, depicting scenes from the Bible with remarkable detail and expressiveness. These carvings served not only as decoration but also as a visual sermon for the illiterate faithful, telling stories of creation, the life of Christ, and the lives of saints. The sheer variety and preservation of these biblical narratives are a significant draw for those interested in medieval art and history. Reddit

Beyond the grand architectural styles, the cloister offers a profound sense of serenity. The enclosed courtyard, often featuring a central garden, creates a tranquil oasis away from the bustling city. This peaceful atmosphere is palpable, inviting visitors to pause, reflect, and appreciate the centuries of devotion and artistry that have shaped this sacred space. Reddit

For travelers planning to explore multiple historical sites in Arles, investing in a multi-site pass is a highly recommended strategy. Passes like the 'Pass Advantage' or 'Liberty Pass' typically offer access to Saint-Trophime Cloister, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Alyscamps, and various museums for a fixed price, often around €19. This significantly reduces the cost compared to purchasing individual tickets for each attraction. Reddit+1

These passes are not just about saving money; they also streamline your visit. By having one ticket for multiple locations, you avoid the hassle of purchasing entry at each individual site, allowing for a smoother and more efficient exploration of Arles' rich heritage. Many visitors find that the cost of the pass is quickly recouped if they plan to visit even three or four of the included attractions. Reddit

When considering a pass, check the official Arles tourism website or inquire at the local tourist office for the most current options and inclusions. This ensures you select the pass that best suits your itinerary and interests, maximizing your experience of Arles' UNESCO World Heritage sites. Reddit
