What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Île Nouvelle Nature Reserve for its peaceful atmosphere and opportunities for wildlife observation, especially during guided tours. The well-maintained picnic areas and the pleasant boat trip add to the overall positive experience. Some note that only a portion of the island is accessible, and historical buildings are off-limits.
"A leisurely stroll on New Island, a peaceful setting for observing wildlife. Only a portion of the island is accessible, a 3 km loop. The rest of the island is preserved. The buildings, part of the island's historical heritage, are not accessible, as is the school. Numerous picnic tables and restrooms are available. 1.5 to 2 hours is more than enough time to complete the visit."

"The island belongs to the coastal conservation authority, it is accessible by boat and for our part we had booked through the Blaye tourist office, the round trip as well as the visit of an accessible part of the island. The guide was excellent, he is a scientist and it was really great to walk with him. The island is maintained, an exhibition is visible there, the habitats are restored (but no one lives there), there is a picnic area. I highly recommend the visit (guided, of course!) of the New Island! :-)"

"A beautiful trip in the estuary with a very friendly crew and the discovery of a site that is worth the trip. The citadel of Blaye or Cussac Fort Médoc are also worth seeing depending on the embarkation point. Very well-equipped area for picnicking on the island with impeccable toilets"

The Unique Ecosystem of Île Nouvelle
During your visit, you'll notice that only a portion of the island is open to the public, with the rest remaining strictly preserved. This careful management ensures the protection of sensitive species and their breeding grounds. The island's historical buildings, though not accessible, stand as a reminder of its past agricultural life.
Guided tours are particularly valuable here, as guides are often scientists who can explain the intricacies of the ecosystem, the restoration efforts, and the species that inhabit the island. This provides a much deeper appreciation for the reserve's significance beyond a simple nature walk.
Planning Your Visit: Boat Trips and Logistics
When booking, inquire about the duration of the boat journey and the time allocated for exploring the island. While the accessible loop is about 3 km and can be completed in 1.5 to 2 hours, the boat trip itself adds to the overall time commitment. It's wise to check if the boat tour includes a guided walk, as this is a highlight for many visitors.
Consider the time of year for your visit. Spring is often cited as a good time for wildlife observation. Remember to pack essentials like water and a picnic, as there are no services available on the island.
