What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Église Sainte-Croix to be a beautiful and impressive church with significant Romanesque architecture and a historic pipe organ. However, many report issues with inconsistent opening hours and occasional ongoing preservation work, which can lead to disappointment.
"Such a beautiful church. Very impressive both outside an in. Sadly it has serious issues with dampness/humidity and the signs of decay are all to apparent. For all that, it is still a magnificent building and well worth visiting. A more obvious donation point would do no harm."

"This is one of the two most impressive churches in Bordeaux. I like the way that the building is preserved with layers of time kept on the facades, creating a sense of a unique and attractive church in its own way. Unfortunately, when I visited, the square in front of the church was fenced for archaeology, and the church was not open, so I couldn't experience the space inside."

"We walked by several times and the place was closed. But this time the doors are open we had the opportunity to go inside and see the interior of the church. It’s built in the 1700s and was renovated a few times. It has a statue of St. George on the façade and upper left side.
If you are a church fan, this would be a place to come with me however there’s no sign in the door let you know when the doors are open.
This one is a lot construction going on just on the outside so it makes it a little bit not so sexy there. There’s a little square nearby couple restaurants you can have a drink a little snack or two enjoy yourself."

Understanding the Architecture and History
Inside, the church houses an 18th-century pipe organ, which is a notable feature for its age and craftsmanship. While the church is a place of worship, its historical and architectural significance draws many visitors. Be aware that due to its age, the building may face challenges like dampness and humidity, which are signs of decay that some visitors have observed. Despite these issues, the magnificence of the building remains evident.
For those planning a visit, it's worth noting that archaeological work has sometimes taken place in the square in front of the church, which could temporarily affect access or views. However, the church's enduring presence and its blend of historical preservation and ongoing use make it a compelling stop for anyone exploring Bordeaux.
