"Definitely must see please - I was surprised how good the crypt can be organized and maintained. It takes like 30-45 min to go thru but is worth any minute. Place has unprecedent atmosphere and kind of art of death. You will see wall art and catacombs painting all over, with all history descriptions you can feel the atmosphere of pre - Europe time."

"Absolutely beautiful museum! Great history and all the signs were in French, Dutch and English which makes it very accessible.
Very sweet staff and also nice and cool especially for in the summer. Absolutely would recommend!"

Angéline

"Nice place to visit, even with your children. I went there with my 10-year-old son who enjoyed discovering every corner of the crypt. This place is a real maze. It is quite dark but it contributes to the general feeling of mystery you get once inside. Some parts are really well preserved. They provide the visitors with useful and interesting information, but it is sometimes hard to decipher the texts written in different languages as several of the lamps are not working. But it is still worth the visit, especially as it is 6€ (if you have no special discount) and free for children (until the age of 18)
If needed, there are toilets just outside the entrance (red door on the right side when coming in)"

Unearthing Lutetia: The Roman Origins of Paris

The Notre-Dame Crypt, officially the Archaeological Crypt of the Île de la Cité, is a fascinating underground museum that reveals the foundations of Lutetia, the ancient Roman city that once stood where Paris is today. Visitors can walk along the remnants of Roman streets, explore the layout of ancient buildings, and even see parts of a Roman bathhouse and its heating system. This site offers a tangible connection to Paris's earliest history, predating the medieval city by centuries. Instagram

The crypt was discovered during excavation work in the 1960s and 70s, prompted by plans to build a new underground car park beneath the parvis of Notre-Dame. The displays within the crypt provide context, explaining the development of Lutetia and its eventual transformation into Paris. Reddit

Experiencing the crypt is like stepping into a time capsule. The dimly lit environment, combined with the exposed ancient structures and informative panels (available in multiple languages), creates an immersive historical journey. While some visitors note that certain lamps might not be fully functional, this can add to the sense of age and discovery. It's a place that encourages quiet contemplation and a deep appreciation for history. Reddit

Photography enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities to capture striking images. The interplay of light and shadow on the ancient stones and murals can create dramatic and evocative photographs.
