"After my cycle buddy was in an accident whilst we were on tour. I had to hire a van in Nevers.and I dropped her off in Roscoff to catch the ferry.
I then had to drop the van off at Brest Airport (as that was the closest place) then cycle across Brest to catch a train to get to Morlaix.
I never had any intention of doing this, catching the train, but I recall it was stressful 9 years ago with all this "sac du velo" nonsense, this is all last minute, I don't want to be here, but it's my duty.
I should be on the Loire somewhere, eating french sausage and sipping wine looking at braless french women as I relax in my easy chair.
I turn up at the train station and ask in French for a ticket for myself and bicycle one way to Morlaix. The blond jobsworth lady at the ticket office, says she can't book my bicycle at the ticket office and that I must do it on the internet, even though I'm at the train station at the ticket office (yes, I know she doesn't write the stupid rules).
She gives me a card with some information on it to book. I have no idea what I'm doing, I've been driving for 9 hours then cycling, trying to get my buddy back to the UK for more medical treatment.
When I ask her for help, she mutters something about "Breizgo" shuts her booth and goes off for a 2 hour lunch break, she probably eats Andouille by the bucket load she's so horrible. "Throw me a bone".... Nothing.
Would this behaviour happen to an 80 year grandmother trying to get her bicycle on the train? A grand mother that doesn't have a smart phone? I should hope not. Surely their computer terminals have internet access for the few times this sort of thing happens, so that they can help people. That's there job isn't it? It's disgusting and discriminatory. This reminded me of why I had given up using trains in France (and touring in France 9 years ago) and the reason I booked a van instead of getting trains back to the UK. All this hoop jumping.
Fortunately I was directed on my 4th attempt at asking for help to Bernhard (No, that's Saint Bernhard) who speaks less English than the horrible lady. He helped me book my bicycle for me on my phone for €1. Seriously.
And then I still had to buy a ticket from the booth for myself anyway, so that lady could have at least sold me a ticket for myself? But not the bicycle. But it was obviously too much bother to do her job.
Then there were no people checking the tickets, no barriers, so I could have got on the train without paying.
Without any of the stress, if I had been less honest. And I could have acted like a stupid foreigner.
What has become of Europe? I thought the UK was bad enough.
