What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Maison de Jean XXII offers a unique stay within a 14th-century palace, praised for its historic charm and excellent old town location. Guests often highlight the personalized service from the family owners. However, some rooms are small, lack AC, and Wi-Fi can be unreliable. A past security incident also warrants caution.
"Historic, family-run hotel carved out of the ruins of a 14th century palace. You can't beat the location or the unique history of this hotel!
The rooms were small with no AC for the summer, but the standing fan was more than adequate. It's a family run hotel so the wonderful Remy served as luggage porter, front desk assistant and breakfast buffet attendant.
Overall a really cool stay!"

"This is a 2 star tourist hotel that is largely unmanned. The room we were allocated was strange. Badly angled wall positioned right next to the bed made getting in and out of bed a danger.
Only one power-point (a triple it must be said) and then on a wall not near the bed.
Hotel is tired - curtain hanging off hook, torn carpet in the hallway (tripping hazard) and toilet roll holder broken. Bed was hard and uncomfortable.
The final kicker for us was that a set of AirPods was stolen from our room whilst we were out once morning. Staff unhelpful when we bought this to her attention. FindMy tracked the Pods to the hotel, but when cleaner left, so did the Pods. Draw your own conclusions. 🤷🏼♂️
Hotel location is ok, at the top of the old town.
Hotel Wifi was poor."

"Wonderful service from Rémi with great restaurants recommendations. He even carried my luggage to my room and after a day of walking el Camino that was a bliss. I highly recommend this hotel."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Consider the layout of the rooms and the historic nature of the building when booking. While the location is excellent for exploring, ensure the room setup is practical for your family. The lack of extensive modern amenities might be a trade-off for the historical immersion.
🚶 Solo Travelers
Be prepared for potentially smaller rooms and the need to secure your belongings, as noted in some reviews. The Wi-Fi can also be inconsistent, so if you rely heavily on connectivity for work or planning, have a backup. Overall, it's a great option for those seeking character and a connection to the past.
💰 Budget-Conscious Travelers
While not a luxury hotel, the charm and location provide a memorable stay. Be prepared for simpler accommodations and potentially fewer services than a larger chain hotel, but the personal service can often compensate.

The Historic Ambiance
While the historic setting is a significant plus, it does come with certain considerations. Rooms can be on the smaller side, and air conditioning is not a standard feature in all of them. However, guests often find that the provided fans are sufficient, even during warmer months. The family-run nature of the hotel means you'll likely interact with the owners, who can offer a more personal touch and local insights.
For those who appreciate character and a story behind their accommodation, Maison de Jean XXII is a compelling choice. It provides a tangible connection to the past that modern hotels simply cannot replicate. Just be prepared for a more rustic, historic experience rather than a sleek, contemporary one.
Navigating Service and Security
However, it's important to note that the hotel's staffing can be limited, which might mean less immediate assistance at times. One significant concern raised by a guest was the theft of AirPods from their room. While the hotel staff were notified, the incident highlights the need for guests to remain vigilant and secure their personal belongings, especially in older buildings where security features might differ from modern standards.
Despite the isolated security incident, the overall sentiment regarding service leans positive, with many guests appreciating the warm and helpful nature of the family running the hotel. It's a balance between historic charm and the practicalities of modern travel, where a little extra awareness can ensure a smooth and enjoyable stay.
