What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
This small cemetery in Collioure is a peaceful and poignant site, particularly noted for the tomb of Spanish poet Antonio Machado and other exiles. While some visitors find its upkeep lacking compared to the town's center, its melancholic beauty and historical significance make it a meaningful stop for those interested in literature and history.
"A small but charming cemetery in the center of the village of Collioure. A coastal town on the French coast in the Roussillon region. Free admission.
A peaceful place with a melancholic atmosphere.
In addition to the tombs of the soldiers who died for France in the 1914 war, there is also the tomb of Don Antonio Machado, a Spanish poet who was forced into exile for being a Republican. He died shortly after arriving, and his remains rest in this cemetery. Anyone who loves literature and poetry should visit.
Admission is free, open to the public, and parking is free for one hour."

"Small cemetery where many generations of the town are buried...

"The town's old cemetery. Aside from the presence of the tomb (a pilgrimage site) of Antonio Machado and those of other Spanish exiles (just looking at their surnames gives you an idea), the state of the cemetery compared to the care Collioure puts into its historic center is truly pitiful. It's embarrassing. Abandoned pantheons, lack of gardens, flowers (in the middle of spring!), passageways in poor condition, etc., etc. It's clear that the town council has no interest in it."
