Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Chartreuse de la Verne as a magical, serene sanctuary nestled in a beautiful forest setting. The restored architecture and peaceful atmosphere are consistently highlighted as major draws, offering a profound sense of calm and historical immersion. InstagramReddit

"This is an amazing refurnished monastery. It is beautifully cool inside. I rode to it on my bike from Collobrières - a lovely ride of around an hour and a half (less if you're fitter than me!). The return journey downhill was lovely."

David Platten

"Magical place.

This monastery is really in the middle of nowhere. Don't be put off by the twisty roads that lead you there.

Amazing, how in former times, people would build such a massive construction so far from anything else, they were really searching silence and seclusion.

Equally amazing, how after a long time of neglect and decline, another generation resurrected the monastery from ruins and once again filled it with life. Worldly as well as spiritual.

Take your time when you visit, this is not a place to rush through."

Joachim Mathes

"Restored monastery in a very secluded chestnut forest. Difficult drive on a tiny mountain road to access the monastery, a good walk from the parking lot, but it's worth all the effort. For a fee you can visit part of the monastery, and the view is just spectacular."

A History of Resilience

Founded in 1170, the Chartreuse de la Verne has a long and complex history. Originally a Carthusian monastery, it has endured periods of prosperity, decline, and neglect. The impressive structures you see today are the result of significant restoration efforts, breathing new life into this ancient site. InstagramReddit

The monastery's secluded location in the heart of the Maures forest was chosen for its spiritual solitude, a characteristic that still permeates the atmosphere today. This remoteness also meant it was vulnerable to historical upheavals, leading to periods where it lay in ruins before being resurrected. Reddit

Today, the monastery is home to a community of Bethlehem sisters, who live a life of autonomy and contribute to the ongoing spiritual significance of the site. Their presence adds a unique dimension to the visitor experience, offering a glimpse into a life of devotion. Instagram+1

The Journey Through the Maures

Reaching the Chartreuse de la Verne is an adventure in itself. The monastery is nestled deep within the Massif des Maures, a mountain range known for its dense forests and winding roads. The drive from nearby towns like Collobrières or Cogolin is a scenic but challenging experience, often described as 'adventurous' by visitors. InstagramReddit

These narrow, twisting roads are part of what makes the monastery feel so secluded and special. They wind through chestnut forests and offer glimpses of the wilder side of the Var region. Cyclists and motorcyclists often find this route particularly rewarding, though caution is advised for all drivers. Instagram+1

Despite the potentially difficult access, the effort is widely considered worthwhile. The journey prepares you for the tranquility that awaits, making the arrival at the monastery feel like discovering a hidden gem. Reddit
