Reviews Summary

Visitors find Château de Kériolet a charming and worthwhile 'hidden gem' with a fascinating history and unique Neo-Gothic architecture. The reasonable entry fee and the dedication of volunteer guides who fund restoration efforts are highly appreciated. However, the mandatory guided tours being primarily in French can be a barrier for non-French speakers, especially families with young children.

"Really cool, bit hidden gem of the town. Volunteers are working on site who also give guided tours, the income is funding the renovations and maintenance of the manor which has a long and complicated but very interesting history, definitely worth visiting!"

Marton Szogradi

"The Château de Keriolet, located near Concarneau in Brittany, France, is a striking 19th-century neo-Gothic castle with an unusual and romantic history. Unlike many châteaux in France, Keriolet is not a medieval fortress but a whimsical revival built on the ruins of an older manor house.

The original structure dated back to the 13th century and belonged to a local noble family. By the 19th century, the property had fallen into disrepair. In 1850, it was purchased the Russian imperial princess Zénaïde Narishkin-Youssoupoff, a member of one of the most powerful families in the Russian Empire who had married a much younger commoner, Charles Chauveau, whom she met in Paris. To elevate his social standing, the princess bought him two titles, a comte and marquis. They had a 25-year age gap, but their marriage endured.

Wanting a residence befitting her noble status while residing in Brittany, the Countess had the château lavishly rebuilt between 1860 and 1870.

Today, it is privately owned and can be visited by guided tours only. €8 per adult with an obligatory donation/tip for the volunteer guides at the end of your tour. The château closes for lunch so make sure you check the opening/tour times and plan accordingly."

The Romantic Revival: History of Château de Kériolet

Château de Kériolet is not your typical ancient fortress; it's a product of 19th-century romanticism. Built on the foundations of a much older manor, the current structure was commissioned by Princess Zénaïde Narishkin-Youssoupoff, a prominent figure from Russian aristocracy. She envisioned a residence that reflected her status and romantic ideals, leading to the creation of its distinctive Neo-Gothic architecture between 1860 and 1870. The château's history is as fascinating as its design, marked by a unique personal story of its royal owner. Reddit

Today, the château is a testament to dedication, as it's privately owned and undergoing continuous restoration. Visitors play a crucial role in this preservation. The income generated from entry fees and donations directly supports the ongoing work to maintain and restore this architectural gem. This means your visit contributes to safeguarding its future for generations to come. Reddit

Understanding this context enhances the visitor experience. It transforms a simple tour into an appreciation of a living historical project. The volunteers who lead the tours are passionate about the château's story and its restoration, offering insights that go beyond mere architectural descriptions. Reddit

These tours are primarily conducted in French, which can be a consideration for non-French speakers. It's crucial to plan your visit around the château's operating hours, as it observes a midday closure for lunch. Checking these times in advance will prevent any disappointment.
