What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Gordes is overwhelmingly praised for its breathtaking beauty, picturesque streets, and timeless charm, often described as one of the most beautiful villages in the world. Visitors love the atmospheric stone architecture and stunning valley views. However, some find the steep, uneven terrain challenging for mobility, and note that dining can be overpriced due to its popularity.

"Beautiful village with lots of charm and picturesque views. However, it’s worth noting that it’s not the easiest place to get around if you have mobility issues, are pushing a pram, or are visiting with young children – the streets are very steep and paved with uneven stones. Also, be mindful of tourist traps: many restaurants and cafés charge excessive prices compared to what you might expect."

Amar

"Absolutely beautiful and quaint French village full of picturesque little streets and houses. It is very compact so great exploring on foot with many wonderful places to stop for drinks or a full meal. I appreciate what everyone else has commented about the 8Eur car park charges, but in retrospect due the popularity and tourist influx if the parking was cheaper it probably would be even more overran by cars."

Edmunds Kalniņš-Kalnarājs

"Beautiful atmospheric village in Provence.

It is well set up for tourist to visit and enjoy the sleepy streets, some food and drink in the restaurants, cafes and bars, and then move on to the next spot.

There is a viewpoint noted on Google Maps that shows the beauty of the view from across the valley. Quite a stunning view.

Within the village, I had a crêpe at the local crêpery and near the roundabout as you enter the village I wrote a couple postcards and had a glass of wine. Super friendly owners.

I was travelling alone on this segment, so I didn't had a car and was reliant on public transport to get here for a day from Marseille. This is possible and I will list my itinerary for August 2025 that included the nearby Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque:

07:06 - 08:20 SNCF train: Marseille to Cavaillon
8:40 - 09:03 Bus 917: Cavaillon to Gordes (ask for Gendarmerie stop)

45 mins approx Hike to Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque
Arrive 09:50 ish

1.5 hour at Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque if taking a lot of photos from nearby viewpoints.

1 hour hike to Gordes
Arrive 12:30

1 hour + Photos around Gordes, lunch, etc.

13:50 - 14:15 Bus 917 Gordes to Cavaillon.

Optional: Explore Cavaillon -typical small town. Not super exciting.

Options for trains back to Marseille:
15:34, 16:37, 17:35 - 18:53
Cavaillon to Marseille.

Trains cost ≈€20 each way.
Bus journeys are €2.10 each way with the local app."
