What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Le Palais is lauded for its impressive Vauban fortifications and the lively, traditional atmosphere of its marina. Visitors appreciate the historical significance and the constant spectacle of boat activity. However, some find the marina's facilities to be basic and in need of an upgrade.
"What a beautiful historic place. One can admire the genius of Vauban upon arriving at the island. The fortifications were well thought of and unfortunately the visit was not open in its entirety. There is a well run operation to get people in and out.
The port has many nice areas for relaxing with a drink or eating or even shopping. It is a nice introduction to the well named Belle- Île. One will often forget they are on an island."

"Le Palais. This town is a bit scruffy and difficult to love but I don't hate it either.
The tidal part of the marina is really in the thick of it there are frequent movements of large ferries all time and smaller boats coming and going. Lots of rafting up and challenging mooring. The marina ribs are constantly buzzing about. There is always something to watch.
The larger sailing boats moor against the NE harbour wall and can only get ashore by dingy. They use fore and aft mooring bouys.
The marina facilities in the tidal part are below par.
There are only 4 showers and two WC to service this part of the marina. They are old and scruffy. For example the shower buttons have to be constantly held in and the floors need painting. Thankfully they did not run out of toilet paper whilst I was there.
On my first visit there was no water in the hand basins and no soap. Just not good enough.
Moving on to the pontoons, they are constructed of those plastic cubes slotted together so there are no cleats just the holes on the edges. It works OK. No water or electricity on the pontoons. Water is on the SE harbour wall adjacent to the fuel.
There is an inner floating harbour but I have no experience of this."
