What Travellers Say

Visitors consistently praise the Donjon de Loches for its historical significance, well-preserved medieval architecture, and the engaging Histo-pad experience. The breathtaking views from the top and the unique prisoner inscriptions are frequently highlighted as memorable aspects. While the numerous steep stairs can be challenging, the overall value and immersive historical journey make it a highly recommended site.
"Very interesting medieval site, initially a fortress then used as a prison use the tablet given to you on entry for more info about the individual rooms, lots of stairs to climb. Visiting the chateau of Loche 5 mins away gave entry to this Donjon."

"This is the oldest prison in France and is well preserved. Much of this towering building was built in the 11th century. The Histo-pad guide is great and documents other key periods especially the wars with Italy in 15th and 16th centuries. There are interesting inscriptions and illustrations on the walls made by the prisoners. The views from the top are breathtaking - you can see for miles in every direction. Descending in the dark caves, with all the creepy corridors and staircases will not disappoint children who like castles! But many of the stairs are steep and narrow. The shop is nice. There’s a cafe but it’s 500m away at the Royal Lodge so bring water on a hot day."

"Compared to the chateaux's of the Loire valley this is a superior experience. The staff speak English and provide you with iPads that activate in specific rooms giving you an AR experience of what it would have looked like in 1073. The site is sizeable and I believe that given the amenities and quality of the building that the ticket price is very fair."
