Chateau d'If - English Tourist

Bonjour Marseille! I am visiting at the end of the month and am interested in visiting Chateau d'If while I am there. On the website, it says that entry is €6. However, I suspect that's to the castle itself and does not include getting there. Are there regular boat…

I recommend also going for a water tour of the Calanques. We saw the castle on one of these tours.

Perfect light on Château d'If

We were in Marseille over the weekend. We wanted to see Château d'If but it was closed for the day. So we took a ferry from the old port in Marseille to Frioul, sailing by the château. The ferry ride takes about 20 mins one way and costs around 5 euros one way.

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Château d'If for its historical significance and its connection to 'The Count of Monte Cristo.' The ferry ride and the panoramic views of Marseille are also highlights. Some find the island small and the historical context could be more detailed, but overall, it's considered a worthwhile and atmospheric excursion.

"I've always wanted to come here ever since I first read the count of monte cristo.
The chateau d'if did not disappoint me.

The Chateau d'If is located on an island in the Mediterranean Sea, about 1.5 kilometers off the coast of Marseille, France. There are two ways to get to the island: by ferry or by boat.
Ferry: The ferry is the most convenient way to get to the island. There are regular ferries that run between Marseille and the island. The ferry ride takes about 15 minutes.
Boat: You can also take a boat to the island. There are a number of private boat companies that offer tours to the island. However, these tours are usually more expensive than the ferry.

The island of If is quite small, and its main attraction is the Château d'If itself. Here's what you can see there:
Explore the different levels of the fortress, including the ramparts with cannons, the guard rooms, and the prison cells. You can walk along the walls, climb the towers, and enjoy panoramic views of the Marseille coastline and the Frioul archipelago.

See the actual prison cells where real historical figures were held, and the (fictional) cell of Edmond Dantès, the Count of Monte Cristo. Some cells have inscriptions left by past prisoners.

There's a small museum within the Château that provides historical context about the fortress, its construction, and its use as a prison.

If you're a fan of the Count of Monte Cristo or Alexandre Dumas, the chateau d'if is a must visit 😊"
