Reviews Summary

Marseille Saint-Charles Station is praised for its grand architecture, especially the monumental staircase, and its role as a vital transport hub. Visitors enjoy the panoramic city views from the terrace and the 'southern spirit' it embodies. However, some find the station and city can be hot in summer, and accessibility can be an issue due to limited elevators and hilly terrain.

"Very clean train station with good links to other cities, however lacking air con but there are plenty of amenities and there are a lot of seating areas if you are incoming or outgoing. There are a lot of spaces to sit outside too, we visited in June 2025 but it was still very hot and the seats are very hot from the sun so you can't actually sit down."

Maya

"I love bullet trains so I'm glad there was one here.
The trains are long though, and I had the last one so you have to book it since they only tell you the train a small amount of time before.
Little to no English here, but that's my fault for not knowing French in France.
Nice people though if you have a question you can just show them your ticket and they'll help. Shops, signs, good location in Marseille. Would come again."

Haley Tibbs

"Quite busy train station but as you arrive you feel directly the southern spirit. Nice weather, blue skies and many people on holiday mood. Coffee shops and shops are available. The terrace overlooking the city is fantastic. I like this train station."

The Grand Architecture of Saint-Charles

Marseille Saint-Charles Station, opened in 1848, is not just a transport hub but a landmark of southern French architecture. Its most striking feature is the monumental staircase of 104 steps, designed to connect the city center with the hilltop station. This grand ascent offers a dramatic arrival experience and panoramic views of Marseille.Reddit The current station building, redesigned between 1893 and 1896 by Joseph-Antoine Bouvard, boasts an airy concourse and a U-shaped structure, reflecting the architectural styles of its era.

The blend of historical significance and modern transit needs makes Saint-Charles a unique destination in itself.
