Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Monpazier for its exceptional preservation and authentic medieval atmosphere, calling it a 'breath of fresh air' and a 'slice of magic.' The quality of food, particularly its well-balanced seasoning and presentation, receives high marks, though some note slightly longer wait times. The village's charm and artisan offerings are frequently highlighted as major draws.

"Great food. Finally food that is not drowned in salt but allows the flavours to present themselves. Simple food well done. Serving size may be a little on the smaller side for some but just right for me. Wait is a bit long but good food is worth the wait."

WF

"Beautiful small restaurant in the charming Bastide de Monpazier.
We hadn’t booked but were immediately shown to our table by the friendly staff.
The food was absolutely amazing, so tasty and well presented. Service was at a very nice pace, not rushed between courses but equally not too long although the restaurant was busier than expected and they were short staffed.
The three course menu was extremely good value from the delightful starter, a beetroot terrine with hazelnut sauce, the fish main course of pollock and Swiss chard to the dessert of Hazelnut Crémeux which was to die for!
First class service and food that we would definitely recommend to anyone visiting this stunning place! We hope to return on another visit."

Claudine Tat

"Very much a discovery away from the crowds in the main square. Food very tasty and atmosphere was relaxing, despite, or perhaps because of, being practically the only guests. Fully recommended"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Monpazier: A Model Bastide

Founded in 1284 by King Edward I of England, Monpazier is considered one of the most perfectly preserved bastides in France. Its grid-like street plan, central market square (Place de la Halle), and surrounding arcades are textbook examples of medieval urban planning designed for defense and commerce. The village was strategically important during the Hundred Years' War, and its architecture reflects this history. Instagram+1

Bastides were fortified towns built during the 13th and 14th centuries, often by English or French monarchs, to consolidate power and encourage settlement in newly conquered territories. Monpazier stands out as a prime example due to its remarkable state of preservation, with many of its original structures still intact. The Château Monpazier, though now in ruins, offers a glimpse into the defensive capabilities of the era. Instagram

Today, Monpazier's historical significance is recognized by its classification as one of the 'Plus Beaux Villages de France' (Most Beautiful Villages of France). This designation highlights its exceptional architectural heritage and its ability to transport visitors back in time. The village's layout and buildings have been carefully maintained, allowing visitors to experience a truly authentic medieval atmosphere. Instagram+2

Monpazier: A Haven for Artisans

Monpazier proudly holds the title of 'Ville et Métiers d'Art' (Town of Arts and Crafts), a testament to its vibrant community of skilled artisans. This designation means the village is committed to preserving and promoting traditional crafts and savoir-faire. Visitors can explore numerous workshops and boutiques showcasing a diverse range of artistic creations. Instagram+2

The artisans in Monpazier work with various materials, including ceramics, textiles, leather, jewelry, and more. Many of them are happy to demonstrate their techniques and share their passion for their craft. This offers a unique opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind souvenirs and support local artists directly. Keep an eye out for special artisan fairs and exhibitions held throughout the year, such as the Salon de Monpazier. Instagram+1

Interacting with these artisans provides a deeper connection to the village's living heritage. It’s not just about admiring beautiful objects, but understanding the skill, dedication, and tradition behind them. This focus on craftsmanship adds another layer of richness to the Monpazier experience, making it more than just a picturesque medieval town. Instagram+1
