Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Nolette Chinese Cemetery as a unique and deeply moving memorial. Its distinct oriental gateway, ideogram-inscribed headstones, and serene countryside setting are frequently highlighted as particularly special. While the site is well-maintained, some visitors note the limited amenities directly at the cemetery.

"A good reputation endures for ever.
A very special place. At first site it looks like a British cemetery. When you look closer you see the Chinese symbols on the headstones and the cross of sacrifice has been replaced by a beautiful tree."

Rolph Klijn

"Lovely little cemetery hidden in the Somme countryside.

Noyelles-sur-Mer was the main support base for the Chinese Labour Corps during the Great War and is therefore a fitting final resting place for the 842 men buried here.

What makes this cemetery so different from any other war cemetery in France are the oriental gateway to the cemetery, the ideograms on the standard CWGC headstones and the three beautiful pine trees inside the cemetery.

Suprisingly, from looking at the visitors book, even though there seems to be a large number of visitors to this cemetery, very few of them seem to be from the UK.

Access to the cemetery is down a short country lane and there is plenty of parking spaces available for visitors.

Don't forget to stop off at the new Memorial to the Chinese Labour Corps situated in the village about a kilometre from the entrance."

Simon Abercrombie

"Special cemetery. A WWI-cemetery with only graves of the Chinese Labor Corps. Beautifully situated in the middle of the grainfields. Also nice, a wild flowers-project next to the cemetery."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Chinese Labour Corps in WWI

The Nolette Chinese Cemetery is a poignant reminder of the significant, yet often overlooked, contribution of the Chinese Labour Corps (CLC) during World War I. Over 140,000 Chinese laborers were recruited to support the Allied war effort, primarily working behind the lines in France and Belgium. They undertook vital tasks such as digging trenches, building roads and railways, and transporting supplies, freeing up European soldiers for combat. Their presence was crucial to the logistical success of the war, yet their stories have historically been marginalized.

Noyelles-sur-Mer served as a major base for the CLC, making the cemetery a fitting and significant resting place for those who died far from home. The cemetery itself is a testament to their sacrifice, designed with unique elements that reflect their cultural heritage. The oriental gateway and the ideograms on the headstones are deliberate choices to honor their identity and acknowledge their distinct contribution, setting it apart from other Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries. This thoughtful design ensures their memory is preserved with dignity and cultural sensitivity. Reddit

Visiting the Nolette Chinese Cemetery offers a chance to connect with this lesser-known aspect of WWI history. It's an opportunity to reflect on the global nature of the conflict and the sacrifices made by individuals from diverse backgrounds. The cemetery, along with the nearby Memorial to the Chinese Labour Corps in Noyelles-sur-Mer, provides a comprehensive understanding of their role and enduring legacy. Reddit

Unique Architectural and Symbolic Elements

What truly distinguishes the Nolette Chinese Cemetery are its unique architectural and symbolic features, designed to honor the specific heritage of the Chinese Labour Corps. Unlike the uniform design of many CWGC cemeteries, Nolette incorporates distinct elements that speak to the soldiers' origins. The most striking is the oriental gateway that marks the entrance, a beautiful and culturally resonant symbol that immediately sets the tone for the site. This gateway serves as a visual bridge, connecting the solemnity of a war cemetery with the cultural identity of those interred there. Reddit

Further enhancing this cultural representation are the Chinese ideograms inscribed on the standard CWGC headstones. These inscriptions are not merely decorative; they are a direct acknowledgment of the soldiers' identity and a respectful way to ensure their heritage is recognized. Coupled with the presence of three beautiful pine trees within the cemetery grounds, these elements create a serene and culturally rich atmosphere. The pine tree, in Chinese culture, symbolizes longevity and steadfastness, adding another layer of meaning to the memorial. Reddit

These thoughtful details transform the cemetery from a simple burial ground into a powerful memorial that respects and celebrates the lives and contributions of the Chinese Labour Corps. The combination of traditional CWGC elements with these specific cultural markers makes Nolette a deeply moving and historically significant site. Reddit
