What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are deeply moved by the historic artistic legacy of the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, often citing the inspiring atmosphere and the chance to connect with the creative spirit of past masters. The life drawing workshops are particularly praised for their focused environment and value. Some confusion can arise regarding the exact location due to potential facade changes, and there's a general sentiment of concern for the preservation of this cultural landmark.
"I came looking for the school as the Hungarian-Indian artist Amrita Sher-Gil (who went onto become one of India and Pakistan’s most celebrated artists) studied here during her time in Paris in the early 1900s. I was at first confused at why the facade didn’t look like the one in the pictures, and I was deeply disappointed as I had walked quite a bit to locate it. I then searched for the 14 numbered building corresponding to the street from other helpful photos on here, and found it in the lane ahead. Tonight, when I read the reviews I learned about an eviction notice and the relocation of a historic school. Among the sadder news from a city that is laden with rich global history.
Hope the art community of Paris is able to build pressure and the 14 Rue de la Grand Chaumiere is still saved and turned into a museum and archives of its famous students and teachers at the very least."

"It would be so tragic for this school to be closed and turned into a commercial site. I lived in Paris for a year (1971--72) and passed by this historic school quite often, but was always too shy to visit. How I regret it now!
Considering the illustrious alumni, so many of whom have become icons of modernist art history, the Académie de la Grande Chaumont must really must become a national monument while continuing as an art school!"

"Legendary! The life drawing workshop is fantastic. €22 per session or €180 for 10 sessions. The atmosphere is both very focused and simple. The models are different every time. Great poses.
And there are people of all levels (well, it's true, many of them are very, very good).
A huge pleasure. I'm hooked."
