What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Barbès-Rochechouart is a polarizing area, often described as chaotic and potentially unsafe by some, yet celebrated by others for its vibrant multicultural energy and authentic street life. While its reputation for petty crime and hectic atmosphere is noted, many visitors appreciate its unique character, affordable food, and role as a key transit hub.
"I have been staying there for a week and have witnessed "white powder" selling activity while passing through the surrounding area. There are different groups of people stationed at each exit (they seem to be selling something) during afternoon and night time. Anyway, you can just ignore them. So far, none of them have disturbed me.
This station serves as an interchange between Lines 2 and 4, making it a vital transit point for people traveling across northern and central Paris. The station lies near several key neighborhoods, including Montmartre and La Chapelle, and is close to major shopping streets, markets, and cultural landmarks. If you are heading to Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, I suggest you change to Line 2 and exit at Anvers Station.
While the station is generally safe during the day, it can feel hectic due to the large crowds and street vendors. Travelers should stay alert but need not be paranoid. Despite the hustle and bustle, Barbès – Rochechouart remains an essential and well-connected part of the Paris Métro system."

"A means to an end. Arrived at this station as a cross over to another line and found it to be above ground. Quite a change from the stations further South on the network. It was open and airy with a distinctive rise to the line coming out of the tunnel. During the day it was no different from most of the station in UK. Nothing for me to be concerned about. Novel to be in a different country. It is what it is and we should all applaud the differences on our planet."
Mike Day
"Not the safest area around the station but at least it's close to Montmartre and Sacre-Coeur."
