Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Saint-Gonéry Chapel for its unique leaning bell tower and the remarkably preserved 15th-century ceiling paintings depicting biblical scenes. Many appreciate that it's a free attraction offering a glimpse into medieval art and architecture. However, a common frustration is that the chapel is frequently found locked, leading to disappointment for those hoping to see the interior.

"An oratory probably built in the 12th century, before being extensively remodelled later. It is possible that it also had a defensive function.

In the 15th century, following the rise of pilgrimage, the original building was extended to the west by a nave and a choir covered with paneling

Dedicated to Saint Gonéry, a healing monk from across the Channel, the 11th-century tower features a Romanesque section to the west. Inside, on the ceiling, there are remarkable Romanesque-style paintings depicting the Old and New Testaments. The exterior pulpit (15th century) is decorated with a 15th-century altarpiece.

Crooked arrow.
On the roof of the Romanesque building, a lead spire was added in 1612. The base, not strong enough, leaned to one side while the spire tilted to the other, giving it its particular silhouette. Consolidation work was carried out but the spire remained as it was.

Sadly the building was locked when we visited."

SJ Mack

"This place is beautiful. The ceiling is unique. Telling the story of the creation of the Earth by God and life of Jesus. Worth a stop. By the way it is free. Check opening times."

Philippe GUEGAN

"Worth a visit on the way to the coast."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Enigmatic Leaning Tower

The most striking feature of the Saint-Gonéry Chapel is its leaning bell tower. Originally built in the 11th century with Romanesque elements, a lead spire was added in 1612. Over time, the base proved insufficient to support the weight, causing the tower to tilt. Instead of correcting it, the tilt became a defining characteristic, giving the chapel its unique and memorable silhouette. This architectural quirk is a testament to the building's long history and adaptation. Reddit

Visitors are captivated by this unusual structure, which stands as a symbol of the chapel's resilience and character. It’s a visual marvel that draws photographers and history enthusiasts alike, offering a distinct landmark against the Breton landscape. Reddit

A Canvas of Faith: The Ceiling Paintings

Inside the Saint-Gonéry Chapel, the ceiling is a remarkable work of art. Dating from the 15th century, these detailed paintings on wooden panels narrate biblical stories, specifically focusing on the Creation of the Earth by God and the life of Jesus. These vibrant depictions served as a visual catechism for worshippers, bringing sacred narratives to life in a time when literacy was not widespread. Reddit

The preservation of these paintings is exceptional, offering a rare glimpse into medieval artistic and religious practices. The simplicity and narrative power of these works are frequently highlighted by visitors as a profound and moving aspect of the chapel experience. InstagramReddit

Concerts in a Historic Setting

The Saint-Gonéry Chapel occasionally transforms into a venue for intimate musical performances, particularly during the summer months. Groups like Imrama Irish Folk have held concerts here, leveraging the chapel's unique acoustics and atmospheric setting. Instagram+1

These events offer a special opportunity to experience the chapel in a different light, combining cultural enjoyment with historical immersion. Due to their popularity, it's essential to book tickets well in advance, as these concerts often sell out quickly. Instagram
