Reviews Summary

Visitors often describe Abbaye du Relec as a magical, serene, and timeless place, particularly appreciating its natural setting and historical remnants. While some find the church itself a bit bare, the overall ambiance, the 'potager', and the opportunity for picnics are frequently highlighted as positives. It's considered a beautiful spot for a relaxing visit and a key destination on Finistère's heritage trails.

"The Abbey of Relec (or Relecq) likely dates back to 1132. The Cistercian monastery flourished rapidly between the 12th and 15th centuries. The monastery also had a significant influence on agricultural development in the Monts d'Arrée region. For example, it possessed extensive knowledge of linen production, which would bring a certain degree of prosperity to this region. However, from the 16th century onward, the monastery began its decline. During the Wars of Religion, the monastery was plundered several times. Even before the French Revolution, little remained of the abbey. Four monks remained, and they had little other resources. The abbey was sold, and during the French Revolution, it served as a stable. The remains were only restored in the 19th and 20th centuries. However, monks never settled in the abbey again after the Revolution.
Today, the remaining complex is a historic monument. What remains are a large Romanesque church and the remains of a cloister, probably dating back to the 13th century. These days, this location serves a cultural purpose and occasionally hosts concerts and exhibitions.
During our holiday in the Monts d'Arrée, we visited not only numerous churches but also this abbey, which once exerted a great influence on the region. The former monastery is still worth a visit. Although very little of the former monastery remains, it remains a beautiful place, with the church, the ruins, a pond, and a former watermill."
