Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Citadelle de Port-Louis for its impressive historical architecture, stunning panoramic sea views, and engaging museums. Many highlight the value of guided tours for unlocking deeper insights and accessing unique areas like the crypt. While the historical significance is widely appreciated, some personal accounts reveal the profound emotional impact of certain exhibits related to wartime events.

"There were two sides to this visit for me. One was touristic, the other very personal. History fans and those who like good views from architecturally interesting places will be spoilt. The citadelle has all you need. It’s easy to get to and park nearby, small to walk around, and there are small museums with very interesting exhibitions inside. When we visited, one of those buildings held a photograph exhibition by Germaine Kanova, a war photographer. Very moving black and white photos of ordinary people as well as soldiers, on both sides of the conflict. Humanity exposed.
Then I came to stand in front of that wall…with photos of the 64 breton resistants who were taken there by the gestapo to be tortured and then shot. Two of the names I recognised, they were my father’s best school friends. It broke me. I knew they had been ‘taken to Port Louis’ as he used to say, but being in that place, I finally understood what he meant. My dad was the lucky one, he was caught at the beginning of his mobilisation and spent 5 years in a PoW camp in Gdansk (then Dantzig)."
