What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the authentic, charming experience of the Train des Pignes, especially the historic steam train. The journey through stunning Provençal landscapes and the opportunity to step back in time are major highlights. While the vintage nature is part of the appeal, some find ticket purchasing confusing and the stops, like Annot, may not offer enough for extended visits.
"A wonderful day out. Destination Annot is a very interesting place with a medieval centre and there are some good restaurants.
Ride a very genuine train with wooden seats, drop down windows and little else, all part of the charm. Tickets can be confusing, we didn't realise we were allocated seats so after twice being asked to move we realised and found our seats that were occupied by two very rude and offhand French old ladies who refused to move until a companion pointed out their error so sorted. The train ride takes about an hour through wonderful scenery, stopping once at Entrevaux and a pit stop to take on water before taking to the hills. Slightly quicker coming back down hill. A great experience."

The Two Faces of the Train des Pignes
When planning your trip, it's crucial to distinguish between these two. The steam train is a heritage attraction, often running only on weekends or during specific seasons, and requires advance booking. The regular service provides a more functional, albeit still scenic, way to travel through the region. Understanding this distinction will help you book the right experience and manage expectations for your journey.
Travelers often highlight the charm of the steam train, with its wooden seats and drop-down windows, as a step back in time. The regular service, while less romantic, still offers breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys, making it a worthwhile option for exploring the region at a more leisurely pace.
Navigating the Stops: Entrevaux vs. Annot
Annot, on the other hand, is celebrated for its medieval center. While it's a picturesque village, some visitors have noted that there might not be enough activities to fill an extended stop, especially during siesta hours when many establishments are closed. The train journey itself is a significant part of the experience, and the return trip often follows the same route, allowing you to see the scenery from a different perspective. Therefore, choosing between these stops, or deciding how long to spend at each, depends on your interests – whether you prioritize historical fortifications and a meal in Entrevaux, or a shorter exploration of a medieval village in Annot.
The Charm of Vintage Rail Travel
Travelers emphasize the passion of the staff, who are often dedicated and happy to share their knowledge about the historic locomotive and the route. This personal touch enhances the overall experience, making it more than just a train ride but a connection to the history of the region. The locomotive itself is a classified historical monument, adding to the significance of the journey for enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.
While the experience is overwhelmingly positive, some minor points of feedback, such as the crew not always wearing uniforms, have been noted. However, these are minor details that do not detract from the overall charm and historical value of riding this vintage train through the beautiful Provençal countryside. It's an opportunity to disconnect and enjoy a truly unique form of transportation.
