Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently struck by the Church of St Joan of Arc's unique, modern architecture, often described as a striking boat or flame shape, and its stunning Renaissance stained glass windows. While its unconventional design might surprise some, its location on the historic execution site of Joan of Arc adds a profound layer of significance. Many find the interior peaceful and visually captivating, making it a memorable stop in Rouen. Reddit

"This church honestly looks more like a parliament building than a traditional place of worship! Entry was free when I visited (it reopened at 2pm), which was a nice bonus. The building’s unique shape really stands out—it's unlike any other church or cathedral I've seen in Normandy. The stained glass windows are quite pretty, too.

The location is a bit odd, though—right in the middle of the square, which doesn’t seem like the most natural spot for it. I actually thought the symbolic stake and the surrounding gardens outside felt more fitting for the setting. Overall, definitely worth a visit just to see something different!"

"The Church of Saint Joan of Arc in Rouen was one of the most moving stops on this trip to France. The Church is in the square where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Never in a million years did I think I'd find myself here! There's a simple cross marking the spot, and standing there gave me chills.

The church itself is… truly unique. It looks nothing like your typical cathedral. The outside is covered in these overlapping tiles that look like scales- very dramatic and almost sea creature like. It had been explained how the roof was made to look like flames (symbolizing her execution) and an overturned Viking ship outside, almost looking like a hat. Super symbolic, and once you know this information, the design makes a lot more sense!

Inside, peaceful and very colorful. All the stained glass windows are unbelievably stunning!

This place is absolutely worth seeing if you are anywhere near Rouen! The history and the design combined is unlike anything I've ever seen!"

How it is Liz

"First they burned her, then made her a saint. What an irony.
The church has very unique architecture, it's not like any other churches I have seen before. It's interesting that locals were not big fans of it, and even protested against it. Nevertheless it's here, in the middle of the Market Square.
A nice place to sit and watch people, and think about your life. Do not miss the place where she was actually burned, to the left from the entrance."

Designed by Louis Arretche and inaugurated in 1979, its distinctive boat-like shape is a powerful symbol. The overlapping roof tiles are said to represent flames, referencing Joan of Arc's martyrdom by fire, while the overall form can also be interpreted as an overturned Viking ship, a nod to Normandy's history.
