"We set out on an adventure that blended history, geology, and a little family magic. I was traveling with my dad, Frits, and we chose the Grotte des Demoiselles in France as our gateway to the distant past. The plan was simple, walk through ancient tunnels, marvel at shimmering mineral formations, and let the cave whisper its stories as only a place of stone and memory can. What followed was more than a tour; it was a shared journey through time, a conversation between generations, and a reminder that some wonders are best experienced slowly, with careful steps and patient awe.

We arrived at the entrance on a bright day, the sun catching on the limestone façade and promising a cool escape from the heat outside. The Grotte des Demoiselles, named after its “young ladies” in the sense of delicate, elegant formations, welcomed us with a hush that felt almost ceremonial. It’s a place where the air itself seems to carry a story, steady and cooler than the world above, an ideal sanctuary for those who crave the quiet drama of subterranean spaces. Our guide explained that the temperature inside the cave averages around 15 degrees Celsius. Not tooth-chattering cold, but cool enough to remind you you’ve entered a different climate, a preserved pocket of Earth where time moves differently.

My dad, adjusted his jacket with a half-smile. “Comfortable,” he said, glancing at me with that fatherly look that says, “Let’s do this.” I nodded, pocketing my camera, eager to capture the textures and tones of the cave’s walls as light played across mineral life and ancient rock.

One of the first things you notice in the Grotte des Demoiselles is the staircase and the little mountain train up into the cave. It is not a modern lift to convenience but a deliberate system that uses weight of the other carriage to encourage an easy and balanced ride.

Once up there are many stairs, a feature that makes the cave feel intimate rather than overwhelming. Each step is a small ceremony, an invitation to slow down, to listen for the echo of footsteps from eras long past, and to feel the space fold around you as you ascend and descend through corridors that narrow in some places and open into grand chambers in others.

Frits and I paced ourselves, trading observations like two custodians of a living museum. He pointed out how certain formations seem almost sculpted by a patient hand, while I focused on the way the mineral deposits caught the light, turning dull gray walls into canvases of iridescent minerals. The climb, while strenuous in places, always rewarded with a new perspective, a new angle on the rock walls and the way stalactites and stalagmites intersect to form natural architecture.

"Great experience travelling into the cave on the funicular. The story of the bear that was found there and the fairies adds a bit of interest for the kids. Our guide was only in French, not sure if they also offer tours in English. Really impressive caves inside and a nice bistro at the end. Definitely don't wear good shoes as there are lots of steps which can be slippy. Free car park available."

"It has its own magical vibe like Lord of the rings or something like that when you can go down into unreal caves. I think it’s one of the best grotto in the south of France as it has a very nice infrastructure like a Funicular and well build in stairs. Anyway you have to walk a lot here. Be prepared and take comfortable shoes. Also, please note that it’s a guided visit only which means that you have to arrive at the time of the visit. The first one starts at 11 and next one is only at 13.00. So, there is a very nice shop and a caffe nearby but still plan ahead if you don’t want to wait too long."
